Monday Morning Markets/Jobs/Opportunities for Writers

  • Interesting residency opportunity (apparently the first of many) in Paris, from VINGT Paris magazine. No application fee. Deadline: October 19, 2011, for a residency that must take place November 20-December 20. (via @parisimperfect)
  • From The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts: “We are currently ONLY open for compressed poetry (no prose poems at this time), and the reading period ends on October 31, 2011. Also, please limit your submission to a SINGLE POEM per reading period.” Pays: $50. (via CRWROPPS-B)
  • Attention, North Carolinians! The deadline for submissions to the 2011 NC State Short Story Contests is October 17. “The contest is open to NC residents (including out-of-state students enrolled in a NC university).  However, you may not be 1) an already published author, or 2) a tenure-track faculty member in the UNC system.” Writers may enter in one of both of the categories: the JAMES HURST Prize for Fiction, with a purse of $500 for longer stories no more than 20 pages or 5000 words/the NCSU SHORTER FICTION PRIZE,  $250 for short-shorts no more than 5 pages or 1200 words. No entry fees. This year’s judge: Ron Rash.
  • Paid internship opportunity with the Nature Publishing Group (New York). Application deadline: October 15, 2011.
  • The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities is looking for “a talented editor and writer to join our creative team in producing KnowLA, the Digital Encyclopedia of Louisiana History and Culture (www.knowla.org), and Louisiana Cultural Vistas, an award-winning quarterly arts and culture magazine in print for 22 years”; Saint Louis Art Museum seeks a Writer/Editor; and One Day, the alumni magazine for Teach for America (New York) invites applications for an Associate Editor position.

  • The Department of English and Creative Writing at Hamilton College [N.Y.] invites applications for a tenure-track position in Creative Writing (Poetry) at the rank of Assistant Professor. Appointment begins July 2012. We seek a poet with a PhD in creative writing or literature, or MFA and MA (or MA equivalent graduate work) in literature. Candidate should have at least one book of poetry, either published or accepted for publication. Teaching load is five courses annually, typically 2 sections of introduction to creative writing, an intermediate or senior workshop in poetry, and 2 courses in literature.
  • “The English Department at Rhodes College [Tenn.] seeks a Poet to join the Department at the level of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), starting August, 2012. We seek an accomplished poet and dedicated teacher who can contribute broadly and energetically to our expanding Creative Writing and Literature track within the English Department. The successful candidate will join a department of active scholars and creative writers who are committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Course load is 3/2, with workshops normally capped at 15 students.”
  • Emory University (Ga.) is looking for a poet: “Faculty appointment for an advanced assistant professor in undergraduate English/Creative Writing Program. Requirements: MFA or PhD; significant publications including at least one book of poems from an established press; Creative Writing teaching experience. Load: 2-2, primarily workshops, with supervision of honors theses, and opportunities to teach literature courses in English.”
  • “The Department of English at Auburn University [Ala.] invites applications for two tenure-track positions as Assistant Professor in creative writing — one with a specialization in fiction, one with a specialization in poetry — to begin Fall semester 2012. The teaching load is 3-2, with assignments primarily in upper-division and graduate writing courses in the genre of specialization (we offer concentrations in creative writing at the undergraduate and graduate levels), but with some teaching in the core curriculum (first-year composition and sophomore literature).”
  • From Lee University (Tenn.): “The Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages announces an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing with an emphasis in Fiction Writing.”
  • Truman State University (Mo.) seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor of English (expertise in fiction required).
  • “The Undergraduate Writing Program of Warren Wilson College [N.C.] seeks a fiction writer to join our faculty and assist us in shaping our growing program. The Writing Program, which exists alongside and shares faculty and courses with the English Department, offers a creative writing major and minor with tracks in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. In addition, the Writing Program houses first-year writing and a Writing Center, supports a literary journal, and hosts a reading series and twice-a-year Writer-in-Residence.

    Do you list opportunities in Canada or opportunities that are available to Canadians?

      Hi, Janet: Are you asking as someone who’d like to share an opportunity or as someone is looking for one? I do post opportunities based in Canada/that are open to Canadians. But those opportunities, too, must not charge application/entry fees, and, in the case of submission calls, they must offer writers payment for their work . Best, Erika
