Friday Finds for Writers

Treasure ChestWriting-related resources, news, and reflections to read over the weekend.

  • Shirley Jackson’s biographer, Ruth Franklin, revisits the reception accorded “The Lottery” when it was published in The New Yorker in 1948.
  • Over on Fiction Writers Review, Aaron Burch interviews Matt Bell (I had the pleasure of hearing Matt read from his new novel here in New York a couple of weeks ago, so I found this interview especially interesting).
  • Another recent literary event on my calendar: Monday evening’s panel at my neighborhood Barnes & Noble featuring author Rebecca Lee, Doug Stewart (Lee’s agent), and longtime Atlantic fiction editor, C. Michael Curtis. After the event, I bought a copy of Lee’s new collection, which Janet Maslin reviewed this week for The New York Times.
  • If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I try to participate in the #StorySunday efforts each week. But there’s a new weekend project that’s getting my attention, too: #SundaySentence, launched by David Abrams.
  • It looks as though the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships are about to get a big boost–see the Poetry Foundation’s announcement.
  • Have a great weekend, everyone. See you back here on Monday!

Erika, hi. Thanks for all the useful stuff you make available. In particular, thank you very much for the link to David Abrams #sundaysentence. I don’t do twitter at all, so would have no idea this was there, waiting.
