Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • “Milkweed Editions is pleased to open submissions for the 2014 Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry. This annual prize awards $10,000 as well as a contract for publication to the author of the winning manuscript….Poets currently residing in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, or Wisconsin are eligible to be considered for the Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry. Manuscripts must be complete, previously unpublished, book-length collections. Submissions will be accepted from December 6, 2013 until January 31, 2014, with the winning collection to be announced in April 2014.” There is no entry fee.
  • “ELJ Publications will open submissions for a chapbook poetry prize [The Pioneer Prize] for no reading fee from December 24th-January 7th each year for publication in March. The competition is open to only English major undergraduates or English Major graduates who have yet to enroll in a graduate program 18 years or older. Under the ELJ Publications imprint, we are looking for emerging writers and hybrid, experimental, edgy manuscripts. We want the red-headed stepchildren. ELJ Publications prefers narrative prose and free verse poetry that explores human emotions, experiences, dreams, revelations, etc. We also veer towards the surreal with powerful images and language. If you feel that your poems fit into any of these categories, please consider us.” Prize: “Author receives $50 award, 10 free copies of the collection and the opportunity to buy deeply discounted copies.”
  • Based in India, The Affair “is a short-story magazine and we do not publish any other form….We are open to any genre, as long as the story is well-written, layered and interesting. This includes everything from literary and weird fiction to horror and detective fiction. We do, however, look for strong narratives.” Pays: “We pay Rs. 3000 [approx. $48] per short story.”
  • Kansas City Voices reopened for submissions on December 15 (and will remain open until March 15).”We accept art, poetry, and prose. There is no need for submissions to relate to Kansas City or the Midwest.” Payment for poetry: “Payment for each published poem will be $20 and one free copy of the magazine. In the sole discretion of the publisher, one poem may receive a ‘Best of Poetry’ award in the amount of $100.” For prose: “Payment for each published prose piece will be $30 and one free copy of the magazine. In the sole discretion of the publisher, one prose piece may receive a ‘Best of Prose’ award in the amount of $100.”
  • From WritersWeekly.com: “We’re out of Features! We pay $60 on acceptance for features, non-exclusive electronic rights only. Our guidelines are here.”
  • Mental Floss is hiring. They’re looking for a Deputy Digital Editor as well as two Staff Writers. All jobs are in New York.
  • The Chapin School (New York) is looking for a Communications Coordinator. “The primary responsibilities of this full-time position consist of creating editorial and visual content for Chapin’s website, publications and marketing materials.”
  • “The Office of Communications Services at Duke University [N.C.] seeks a news writer with experience in telling stories in different forms. This curious writer is a resourceful communicator who can contribute various journalistic skills on any given day in support of Duke’s programs and initiatives. He or she will write well-crafted and engaging news and feature stories for print and online, shoot and edit short videos, take photos, contribute to social media and help build and execute successful strategic PR/communications plans.”
  • “The Creative Writing Program at the Lewis Center for the Arts, Princeton University [N.J.] is seeking a distinguished writer for a potential part-time opening in poetry. The position is a one-semester appointment, beginning February 2014.”
  • “The School of Arts and Letters at Truman State University [Mo.] is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-eligible faculty position in the Department of English and Linguistics to start August 2014. The position is expected to start at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities include introductory undergraduate courses, advanced undergraduate courses and graduate courses in creative writing, literature, film studies, and related interdisciplinary areas. Scholarly activity and output appropriate to the rank is expected consistent with Truman’s teacher-scholar model. Additional duties after the first year include advising, mentoring of students, and service to the university and community.”

      Curious about The Affair. There’s no indication on the linked web site or the FaceBook page about who is sponsoring this new magazine and how they will make money to pay authors. Should that be a red flag?

        It’s true that especially with a new magazine, it can be a good idea to see how the first issue turns out (or the first few issues). I’m not sure how many magazines provide an explanation of exactly how they fund their writer payments–a bigger concern of course would be reports of non-payment.

        The self-declared founding editor of this magazine posted an announcement within a Facebook group I belong to. That’s how I found out about it. This is the FB account she used to post the announcement to the group: https://www.facebook.com/shweta.sharan.7 .
