Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • “The Center for Literary Publishing will publish two new titles in the Mountain West Poetry Series in 2015. We are seeking manuscript submissions from poets living in the Mountain West: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, & Wyoming. Please do not submit if you do not currently reside in one of these states. Manuscripts must be at least 60 pages but no more than 100 pages….Deadline is April 15, 2014. Manuscripts will be selected by June 30, 2014. This is not a contest, and there is no submission fee.”
  • Shenandoah‘s Bevel Summers Prize for the Short-Short Story is open for submissions through March 31. “Entry fee is WAIVED THIS YEAR. Writers may submit as many as three stories. The winner will receive $1000 and publication in Shenandoah; all finalists will be eligible for publication in Shenandoah. WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN JUNE. No friends, relatives, students or teachers of judge Nick Ripatrazone will be eligible this year.”
  • “Two six-month, full-time, paid writing internships are available at Smithsonian magazine in Washington, D.C., beginning July 2014. The editorial internship involves writing, blogging and producing multimedia for the magazine’s website and writing for the print magazine’s “Smithsonian” department. The digital internship involves writing, blogging, producing multimedia for the magazine’s website, assisting in managing Smithsonian.com’s social media presence and other research and reporting tasks.”
  • “The Wall Street Journal [New York] is looking for a talented journalist to serve as a blogger for Speakeasy, the Journal’s culture site….We’re looking for a journalist with wide-ranging knowledge in arts and pop culture, a passion for breaking news, a smart and witty writing style, and a keen interest in recapping TV shows, covering celebrity events, interviewing entertainers, attending concerts and exploring cultural debates. This person would be working as part of a small staff and therefore should be a team player willing to take on a number of production-related tasks, such as live-blogging. The staffer will also have the opportunity to write for the print Wall Street Journal.” (NB: The Wall Street Journal is also “looking for a seasoned journalist to serve as a day-to-day manager of Speakeasy, the Journal’s culture site, and oversee the daily flow of arts and culture news.”)
  • “The Department of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) seeks an assistant professor to teach professional writing.”
  • “The Franklin & Marshall [Penn.] English Department invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professorship to begin in the fall of 2014 in creative writing: nonfiction. Significant publications, a demonstrable commitment to undergraduate teaching, and a terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) are required. The 3/2 teaching load will include no composition.”
  • “The Department of English at Beloit College [Wisc.] invites applications for a one-year sabbatical replacement in American Literature, Creative Writing and Journalism for 2014-15, with the possibility of a renewed second-year contract. The successful candidate will teach 5-6 courses during the academic year, including introductory and survey courses in American literature, one course in the candidate’s specialty (depending on strengths), and introductory creative writing….Ph.D. preferred. Advanced ABD will be considered.”
