Monday Markets for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Time’s running out if you want to submit work for possible inclusion in the winter 2014 issue of Room, “Canada’s oldest literary journal by and about women.” Deadline is April 30. Pays: “We pay $50 for up to 2 pages, $60 for 3 pages, $80 for 4 pages, $100 for 5 pages, $120 for 6+ pages, and $250 for cover art. Contributors also receive two copies of the issue in which the work appears and a year’s subscription to Room.”
  • On a somewhat related note: “Poets & Writers presents the Amy Award each year to recognize promising women poets, age 30 and under, living in the New York City metropolitan area or on Long Island. Winners receive a modest honorarium and give a reading in New York City. The award was established in 1995 by Paula Trachtman and Edward Butscher of East Hampton, New York, in memory of Ms. Trachtman’s daughter, Amy Rothholz, an actor and poet….Emailed entries must be submitted by June 1, 2014. Mailed entries must be postmarked by May 31, 2014.” No entry fee indicated.
  • From Jewish Literary Journal: “We are proud to announce that we are holding a 1-year anniversary competition on the theme of “Creation/Building.” Entering is Free. There will be 1 winner each in Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Non-Fiction, with a $50 prize per winner to be paid through Amazon Payments. The submission period is April 15-June 15 and winners will be published in issue 13, publishing July 1st. The Editors of the JLJ will decide who wins.”
  • “The Baffler Foundation is a literary and educational non-profit seeking an Editorial Assistant to work on its new imprint, Baffler Books.This is a part-time position, requiring approximately 20-hours per week onsite at our modest office located near Inman Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts.”
  • The Chronicle of Higher Education is looking for a smart, technically savvy Web News Writer to be the constant eyes and ears for the newsroom on what is being reported about higher education each day.” This job is located in Washington.
  • “The News Office of the University of Chicago is seeking an enterprising writer and media relations officer to cover the University’s intellectually rich and ever-changing campus life.”
