Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
“In honor of experimental novelist, punk poet, essayist, and sex-positive feminist writer Kathy Acker, and in support of innovative, exceptional text-based practices, Les Figues Press is now offering a Kathy Acker Fellowship. The Kathy Acker Fellowship provides a part-time, 9-month appointment for an emerging writer/artist, literary editor, or arts curator/organizer. The Kathy Acker Fellow will learn the ins-and-outs of small press publishing while also completing a curatorial project in the City of West Hollywood.” No application fee. NB: “We will begin reviewing applications and interviewing immediately.”
Fine Linen is currently reading (very) short fiction (200-700 words). Pays: “Our current rate is $0.05/word. We ask for first publication rights and we pay on publication.”

From Structo magazine: “For the last few years Structo‘s poetry editor Matthew Landrum has run a contest which asks for free translations of biblical psalms during the season of Lent. Last year we helped to run the competition, and in the process received some top-notch submissions from authors across the world. Some were religious; some were secular. Some kept close to the source material; others made bold departures from the original. The results were striking. We ended up publishing the winner and two others in issue 12. Two of these went on for Pushcart Prize nominations. Now with Lent upon us again, we’re opening submissions for a second year of the contest. The winner gets publication in issue 14 of Structo, US$150, and a two-year subscription.” No entry fee. Deadline: April 5, 2015 (midnight GMT).
“The English Department at Washburn University [Kansas] is seeking a Creative Nonfiction writer to join a vital writing program with well-published colleagues in fiction and poetry. This position is a full-time 9-month, tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2015.”
“The Creative Writing Program at Oberlin College [Ohio] invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of 1 year, beginning fall 2015 and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the general area of fiction, with expertise in a second prose genre strongly desired.”
Job in New York: “Scientific American Mind, the bimonthly magazine of brain and behavioral sciences, seeks an experienced full-time editor who is a master at structuring long articles by journalists and also at converting technical manuscripts written by scientists into lively, conversational English.”
In Philadelphia, there’s a job notice seeking a Staff Writer, Stewardship Communications, at the University of Pennsylvania.
In Washington: a job for a Communications Staff Writer/Editor at Georgetown University.
