Monday Markets for Writers: No Fees. Paying Gigs.

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • You’ve still got (limited) time to submit work fee-free to The Tishman Review. The journal publishes short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and book reviews. This window runs through today, June 15. Pays: “The Tishman Review pays all our contributors for both prose and poetry on a sliding scale between $10 and $75 based upon content and word count….Contributors of prose and poetry will receive one free print copy of the issue in which they appear.”
  • Huge news last week from Fig Tree Books (where, you will recall, I am Media Editor). The Company is now expanding beyond literary novels to accept memoirs, young-adult novels, and graphic novels. All must fit with the Company’s focus on works of American Jewish Experience (AJE). Full announcement here. FTB pays competitive advances and standard royalties, and welcomes both agented and unrepresented manuscripts. (Please, everyone–I am thrilled when you are interested in sending work to FTB, but acquiring manuscripts is not one of my main responsibilities. Please do not email/message me privately to ask if you should send in your manuscript. Read and follow the guidelines. The Submittable link works! And we have really good people reading every submission that comes in.)
  • Vox is launching a section of “thoughtful, in-depth, provocative personal narratives that explain the most important topics in modern life. We’re calling this section First Person.” Pays. “If your pitch gets accepted, we’ll discuss specifics.” (h/t Judy Bolton-Fasman)
  • From Story: “Climate change is one of the most significant issues of our time. How do we tell stories of it? How do its stories inform us? For Issue #4, send your best work in any form that explores the natural and built worlds here on Earth. Glaciers and cityscapes. Flora and fauna and concrete. From the pastoral all the way to Mega City One. Currently 9-12 month response time.” Deadline: July 15. Pays: “Story will pay author(s) a minimum of $30 per poem, $20 per page of prose (up to $200), and $100 per interview upon publication of the work(s) in print editions of Story. Unfortunately we do not currently pay for online publication or for reprints of already-published work.”
  • The Book Club of California (San Francisco) seeks a part-time Programs and Outreach Coordinator.
  • Penguin Random House (New York) is looking for an Editorial Lead, ReadItForward.com.
  • “Northern Arizona University, English department is seeking an LLecturer in Creative Writing – Fiction/Nonfiction for the Flagstaff campus.”

    1. Hi Erika,
Thanks for letting us know about the Tishman Review. I was able to submit several things!

Good! I did, too. The last time I did something similar (posted on the blog about a brief window for Crab Orchard Review), my stuff was rejected, but someone who saw the listing here had something accepted! Who knows? Maybe history will repeat itself here! 😉 Keep me posted.
