Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer
Delightful Discoveries
It pleases me so much when I learn that people are still discovering/reading Quiet Americans. And it thrills me when I find out that the book is actually being taught (especially when it is being taught alongside other authors’ work that I’ve read and admired myself). So you can imagine how absolutely delighted I was when, during last week’s vacation, I received a tip from a cousin about this course description, taken from his synagogue’s latest adult-education catalog.
Pretty nifty, isn’t it?
And then, someone who isn’t related to me–a total stranger, in fact!–tweeted this:
@erikadreifus Just wanted to say, I read Quiet Americans and loved it. I teach English, might teach your book sometime in the future.

So it has been a special week so far as that sort of thing goes.
Mission Accomplished
I am immensely relieved to tell you that I have submitted the aforementioned grant application. (Now just to confirm receipt of both the online and postal versions.) Please wish me luck!
ICYMI
The September issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers earlier this week. In addition to the usual panoply of no-fee contest listings and calls from paying presses/publications, it contains a feature Q&A with Tracy Crow about a new “how-to” writing guide that focuses on writing the military story. As always, the current issue is available online to all.
How exciting that your book is being taught! Congratulations!
Thank you!
Mind the deceleration, Erika. I think you’ve arrived!
BTW, I really enjoyed the Tracy Crow interview. As a retired Army National Guard NCO I find a lot of fictional military stuff downright cringeworthy.
I’m so glad that you liked the interview–thanks for telling me/us.
