Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers: No Fees to Submit/Apply. Paying Gigs.

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • To celebrate five years of blogging, Nina Badzin is offering a special giveaway: a spot in the online Winter Joy Retreat: Edible Memories (“a writing retreat on food as a metaphor and a feast for memory”; value: $65). Enter by 5 pm on Wednesday, November 25th (Nina’s based in Minnesota, so I’m guessing that’s the local time zone you should keep in mind).
  • The 24th Annual Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest, which “is open to Texans and non-Texans alike,” welcomes submissions until December 11, 2015. Prize: “$1,500 to be divided among the five winners. Manuscript to be published in early winter in The Austin Chronicle.” No entry fee indicated. (via WinningWriters.com)
  • “In recognition of Gurney [Norman]’s contribution to the University of Kentucky and to Appalachian literature, Limestone is proud to present the Gurney Norman Prize for Fiction. Open to all undergraduate students at an institute of higher education in the states defined as central and southern Appalachian states, the Gurney Norman Prize for Fiction is open for submissions until 31st December 2015.” Prize winner receives $300; “all finalists will have their work published in a print edition of Limestone, due for release in spring 2016 and will also receive one copy of the print edition in which their work appears.” No entry fee. Check the guidelines for clarification on which states qualify as “central and southern Appalachian.”
  • From the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis: “Want to engage with the Loft and earn class time while doing it? Become a Work/Study student! For each hour you work at the Loft, you will earn an hour of class time. Work a total of 24 hours for a twelve-week class, 12 hours for a six-week class… you get the idea. Once you have completed your hours, you can enroll in a Loft class for free!”
  • From Make a Living Writing: “Websites that Pay Writers 2015: These 79 Sites Offer $50 and Up.”

    1. Nina says:

Thanks for including my post! And thanks for pointing out the time zone. I just added that to the post. Oops! (Yes, central. Not as my best friend in NYC calls your time, “real time.”) 😉

      1. Erika Dreifus says:

I love the generosity of the post, Nina. And hey, what’s an hour among friends?
