Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Working While on Vacation

So, yes, I stole a few days last week for a vacation.

And in case you’re wondering, it is very pleasant to have a (big) glass of champagne at the ready as you reread a book that you’ll soon be teaching.

(But even without the champagne, I’d have loved Julie Orringer’s The Invisible Bridge anew. Can’t wait to discuss it with my group tomorrow!)

An Elusive Acceptance!

Also while I was away–a slew of rejections arrived.

But there was also one acceptance! Yay!

More to be revealed about that soon, in my next update for the Poetry Has Value project after this month ends.

Absent from #AWP16

Unlike thousands of other practicing writers, I am not California-bound today. I am not heading to #AWP16, the 2016 conference of the Association of Writers & Writing Programs. But I’ll be lurking virtually via hashtag.

And, of course, I’ll be sending out the April issue of The Practicing Writer right on schedule. So, there is that for all of the other homebodies to look forward to!

  1. Hi Erika, Congrats/mazeltov on the acceptance. I relished your mention of Julie Orringer’s ‘The Invisible Bridge’; I think it is an excellent book and it has stayed with me since I read it at least 4 years ago. Paul.

Thanks, Paul! Yes, THE INVISIBLE BRIDGE more than held up for me when I reread it.

  2. Erendira says:

Congratulations Erika. We seem to be in synchronicity again. I’ve had a slew of rejections in March, but today I got a piece published. See it here. Personal memoir: http://www.cordella.org/#/silent-vestiges/

    1. Erika Dreifus says:

Oh, Erendira–what a piece that is. I am so sorry for your suffering. May the publication bring further healing to you–and to others.

From what I have read so far from your book, Quiet Americans, you are definitely more than just a practicing writer – you are a very gifted writer.

    1. Erika Dreifus says:

      That’s extremely kind! Thank you!
