Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Current poetry contest from CHA: An Asian Literary Journal seeks work on the theme of “addiction.” You can submit up to two unpublished poems (maximum 80 lines each). Each poet can submit up to two poems (no more than 80 lines long each). No entry fee. Prizes: “First: HK$500, Second: HK$300, Third: HK$150, Highly Commended (up to 5): HK$100 each. (Payable through Paypal.) All winning poems (including the highly recommended ones) will receive first publication in a special section in Issue 33 of Cha, due out in September 2016.” Deadline is August 1, 2016.
  • The July edition of Cathy’s Comps and Calls has been posted. Cathy Bryant features there no-fee opportunities, but not all of them pay cash, so be sure to read carefully for details (and, of course, to click through to the original listings themselves).
  • From Josefin Dolsten (in a Facebook group, and shared here with permission): “Seeking submissions for the Forward’s Sisterhood blog (http://forward.com/sisterhood/). Topics of interest include but not limited to: intersection of Judaism and feminism; personal essays on topics such as sexual orientation, body image, motherhood, dating; your take on how current events (in Israel/ US/ elsewhere), the elections, SCOTUS relate to Jewish women. Posts don’t necessarily have to have a strong Jewish component. Pay is $100 and length is flexible but usually around 700-800 words. Email dolsten(at)forward(dot)com with submissions/ideas. Only original ideas (no reposts).”
  • On a related note: WritersWeekly.com recently published Shanon Lee’s list of 9 “feminist-friendly paying publications.” (hat tip: Beyond Your Blog)
  • ICYMI: The July issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers last week. As always, the newsletter is filled with information on contests and submission calls that don’t charge fees AND ALSO pay writers for their work. You can find the current issue online.
  • “The Program in Creative Writing at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University is seeking distinguished writers for a potential part-time opening in poetry. This position is a one- or two-semester appointment. The position begins September 2016 and/or February 2017.”

  • “Booksmith in San Francisco has a rare opening for an Events Manager. Booksmith produces over 100 literary events each year and has hosted such celebrities and thinkers as Neil Gaiman, Adam Johnson, Mary Roach, Patti Smith, Michael Pollan, Sherman Alexie, Helen Oyeyemi, Ozzy Osbourne, Carlos Santana, and others. As we continue to expand our events programming, we’re looking for someone with a passion for ideas, literature, and current events who wants to bring that passion to a leading producer of literary and cultural events in the San Francisco Bay Area.”
  • The New Republic magazine is looking for smart, talented, energetic staff writers to cover politics for its website, NewRepublic.com.” Location: “These positions are located in Washington, D.C., but we’ll also consider applicants in New York City.”
