Friday Finds for Writers

Treasure Chest
Writing-related resources, news, and reflections to enjoy over the weekend.

  • Inkshares asked: “What can authors do to entice booksellers?” And Allison Hill, President/CEO of Vroman’s Bookstore & Book Soup, responded, in this interview. (via Shelf Awareness)
  • This week brought an an outstanding craft essay on historical fiction this week over on Literary Hub.
  • And another Lit Hub piece I’m still thinking about: James Boice on “how high [literary] culture sustains gun culture.”
  • I’ve been Scrivener-averse (due mainly to my chronic, low-grade technophobia). But “10 Ways to Use Scrivener for Poetry Manuscripts,” on the Red Sofa Salon site, may finally win me over.
  • And it took me until a few days after the holiday to run across them, but I love these Labor Day thoughts from Karen Craigo: “Over coffee this morning, I’ve spent some time reflecting about Labor Day, and how it’s a holiday that writers have reason to be especially grateful for.” She’s right.
  • Have a great weekend, everyone.

    1. Thank you for sharing this interview. Allison Hill’s practical suggestions as to what booksellers are looking for and how to approach them are invaluable. She ends the interview encouraging writers about the possibility of passionate support for future books. Thanks so much!
