dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Wax Poetry and Art presents Poetry Contest #12.” Open to all. Cash prizes: $100 CAD/$20 CAD/$10 CAD, plus $20 CAD to top Canadian entry. NB: No simultaneous submissions. No entry fee. Deadline: November 30, 2016.
  • “Exciting news! Electric Literature has received support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs to offer full scholarships to a series of writing workshops and masterclasses co-presented with Catapult. New York city-based writers of all ages and experience levels are invited to apply through a simple application process.” No application fee. Deadline: December 15, 2016.
  • “The Hefner Heitz Kansas Book Award ‘in Poetry’ ‘in Fiction’ and ‘in Creative Nonfiction’ alternates yearly for each genre. The 2017 Hefner Heitz Kansas Book Award is for Best Work of Fiction, and will be judged by Grant Tracey. The prize, of $1,000, will be awarded to a book that meets the guidelines below, and the winner will be invited to Washburn University’s Mabee Library in the Spring of 2017 for a reading and presentation ceremony.” NB: “Author must establish a connection to Kansas by birth, education, employment, residence or other significant claim.” Also note: “Books must have an original publication date (copyright notice) within three calendar years immediately preceding the year of the competition deadline.   • CLMP [the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses] “seeks to hire a Director of Programs & Strategic Communication.” NB: “Full-time position at four days per week (full benefits).” Job is located in New York.
  • Job at the University of Pittsburgh: “The Associate Editor of Pitt Med will need to apply strong writing and editorial skills to the production, in a team setting, of an award-winning-quality quarterly magazine for the School of Medicine. Duties include: receive individual writing assignments and standing editorial assignments from the Editor-in-Chief, to whom this position reports, and the Senior Editor of Pitt Med.”
  • “The George Mason University [Virginia] Office of Communication and Marketing seeks a Communications Officer, responsible for supporting the university’s mission by communicating about its educational programs, research, faculty and students.”
  • “The Young Writers Workshop of the University of Virginia, established in 1982 as the nation’s flagship program for teenage writers, is in its fourth decade of bringing together a community of writers from across the country and beyond its borders with a common purpose: to create a supportive, non-competitive environment where writers in grades 9-12 can live and work together as artists.” Currently advertising: “Creative Writing Instructor positions in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, songwriting, scriptwriting (stage and screen), and graphic fiction & nonfiction workshops are 30 hour per week positions for 6 weeks during the summer, working June 18-July 28. These at-will wage positions do not carry benefits.”
  • Saint Mary’s College [Indiana] seeks an assistant professor of English in Creative Writing for a tenure-track position beginning August, 2017. We seek a poet with secondary expertise in creative nonfiction and a commitment to our mission of providing the highest quality education to undergraduate women.”
