Jewish Literary Links for Shabbat

Every Friday morning My Machberet presents an assortment of Jewish-interest links, primarily of the literary variety.

  • Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to attend a Philip Roth tribute here in New York City. And we’re all lucky that Adam Chandler was also present, covering the event for Tablet.
  • The October Jewish Book Carnival went live this week. Go enjoy it.
  • Managing Editor sought: “Dynamic individual needed to lead biweekly newspaper. The Jewish Voice, a 9,500 circulation, non-profit newspaper, published by the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, seeks a highly organized strategic thinker.”
  • “The Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) is looking for a Program Officer to support the growth of PJ Library, the foundation’s Jewish family engagement program, in the New York metropolitan region.”

    Job Opportunity with New Voices magazine/Jewish Student Press Service

    Seeking recent college grad for full-time position: Editor in Chief of New Voices Magazine (newvoices.org) and Executive Director of Jewish Student Press Service.

    New Voices Magazine and the Jewish Student Press Service (JSPS) have a full-time job opening for the Editor in Chief of an online magazine and Executive Director of the small nonprofit that publishes it. The start date is September 2013.

    New Voices (est. 1991) is a national, independent magazine written by and for Jewish college students. Now a web-based publication, New Voices is published by the nonprofit Jewish Student Press Service, which was originally established in 1970 by a group of student activists to connect Jewish campus newspapers across the country.

    New Voices covers Jewish issues from a student perspective, and has traditionally been progressive and pluralistic. New Voices and JSPS have launched the careers of countless journalists now working in both Jewish and mainstream media.

    The salary is $32,000 per year and the position includes health benefits.

    Words of the Week: Andrew Silow-Carroll (on Alice Walker)

    I don’t begrudge Walker her politics. But I would take her seriously only if she demonstrated that she understood the history of the conflict, the legitimate security fears that have undermined Israeli peace efforts, the political pressures that have stymied Israeli peacemakers, the vicious terrorism and hateful rhetoric that has characterized the Palestinian “resistance” for decades and repelled even Israeli moderates; the seemingly unbridgeable divisions within the Palestinian movement itself; and the cruelties on both sides that must be confronted, acknowledged, and repented for before you can even start talking about a solution.
