Updated, Expanded No-Cost Contest Guide

It’s summer, which means it’s time for the semiannual update for our Guide to No-Cost Literary Contests and Competitions. I’ve gone through the e-book once again, weeding out “dead” programs as well as those that are now charging reading/application/entry fees. And I’ve still managed to add a net gain of 18 opportunities! As usual, none of them are limited to the residents of a single state or province (I could have included those and upped the total number of competitions, but that wouldn’t have made the guide as valuable for all of you). And I think 239 contests/competitions is still pretty good.

There are opportunities here in every genre, for writers at every level. Check it out here, and download the free preview (with sample listings).

Family Health History

You may already know that family history is one of my obsessions–I mean, hobbies. Sometimes, obsessions can be healthy. Check out my article on family health history, first published in Family Chronicle, reprinted in Reunions magazine, and now available online. There’s lots of other useful information on family health history on that page, too—just in time for the summer family reunion season.

Occupational Hazards

The more time I spend at the computer the more often I feel disturbing pains in my fingers, hands, and wrists. I need to heed some of the advice in Geoff Hart’s article on avoiding repetitive-stress injuries. Maybe you do, too. (Thanks to Claire Zulkey at the MB Toolbox for the lead.)

New Magazines

Maybe you’re up for some market research this weekend. If you want to know about new magazines–presumably open to writers–check out the archived Media Focus articles over at Bacon’s The Navigator. And find the current Media Focus feature here.

If you’re willing to do some more independent research, you’ll find lists of newly-launched magazines (which you can then investigate on your own) over at the site of Samir “Mr. Magazine” Husni, Ph.D.: Mr. Magazine.

Happy hunting!

Avoiding Plagiarism

All the recent focus on (possible) plagiarism in the work of a certain young writer has reminded me of an excellent book I reviewed little over a year ago. See my Community College Week review of Charles Lipson’s Doing Honest Work in College: How to Prepare Citations, Avoid Plagiarism, and Achieve Real Academic Success (University of Chicago Press), subsequently posted at Lipson’s Web site.

Lipson also provides many useful links to resources to help writers and teachers do honest work.
