  • Short Story Month is nearly upon us. Do you have plans to celebrate? I’ve been remiss: I’d hoped to organize a virtual “panel” on Goodreads featuring some short-story authors of my acquaintance, but I’ve fallen woefully behind. I think that I’ll at least be able to manage a giveaway. Stay tuned! (And let me know what you may be planning.)

  • The New York Times spotlights writing by veterans, and workshops and journals that are supporting it.
  • Recently, Writer Abroad attended TIPE, The Independent Publishing Event in Zurich. “Here are some of the things she learned.”
  • This is getting to be a habit. Every week, it seems, I can’t resist sharing one of Carol Tice’s posts with you. This week’s offering: “The New Freelance Writer’s Quick-and-Simple Guide to Getting Started.”

  • Judging by how often I’ve seen them mentioned this last week, I sense that I should be telling you something about Bookish and Vine. But neither one has grabbed my attention yet (my adoration for The Totally Hip Video Book Reviewer notwithstanding). What am I missing here?

    Monday Markets for Writers

    Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Canada-based SubTerrain plans a spring issue on the theme of “Heat”: “political, sexual, economic, environmental — whatever the topic or situation, just make sure it’s HOT!” They’ll consider fiction, commentary, poetry, essay, and memoir. Pays: $25/poem and $25/page of prose. Deadline: February 15, 2013.
  • Fellowship program for emerging NYC poets: “Emerge – Surface – Be is a natural extension of The Poetry Project’s program offerings. It formalizes the distinct yet unspoken pedagogical aspect of The Poetry Project’s programs while providing a unique opportunity to support, develop and present emerging NYC-based poets of promise. Three emerging poets will be selected by and paired with poet mentors Anselm Berrigan, Patricia Spears Jones and Edwin Torres, and over the course of nine months be given the opportunity to develop their craft and complete a project. Ideal Fellows will have a project they are working on or want to embark upon, and feel that they would benefit from guidance. Each Fellow will receive an award of $2,500.” No application fee. Deadline: February 18, 2013.
  • And another opportunity for poets in NYC: “Mid-Manhattan Library is pleased to offer a free ten-week workshop with Hermine Meinhard, The Art of Making Poems: Creation and Craft, on Tuesdays, from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m., beginning February 12th.” This workshop is open to adults 55+. Check the full description and registration instructions. Limited enrollment.
  • “The Anglican Theological Review Poetry Prize competition is open to emerging poets: that is, poets who have not yet published a full-length book of poetry or any other genre of literature. Poets whose work has appeared in chapbook form and/or in journals are eligible. Contestants should submit one unpublished poem, in any form, but not to exceed 64 lines. There is no specific theme, although writers who are familiar with the poetry published in the ATR will see a preference for work that reflects an incarnate sense of the sacred.” Deadline is March 1, 2013, and there is no entry fee. “The winner of the ATR Poetry Prize will be announced in the summer 2013 issue of the ATR, where the winning poem will appear. The poem also will be posted in the ATR website. The winning poet will receive $500.” (via Writing-world.com)

  • Salem State University (Mass.) seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in creative writing, the English Department of the University of Hawaii plans to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in Fiction Writing, the English and Creative Writing Department at Hamilton College [N.Y.] is looking for a Creative Writer specializing in poetry for a one-year leave replacement position at the level of Assistant Professor, and the English Department at Sweet Briar College [Va.] is advertising for “a full-time sabbatical-replacement position in Creative Writing at the assistant professor level beginning in August 2013. The position includes the possibility of renewal for a second year, also as a sabbatical replacement, and of a subsidized rental residence on campus for the successful candidate.”

    Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write, especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.

  • Attention, Canadian poets! “The Arc Poetry Soci­ety is seek­ing pro­pos­als for the pos­i­tion of Poet-in-Residence. The 2013/2014 pro­gram will rep­res­ent Arc’s 4th vir­tual res­id­ency; Tim Bowl­ing is cur­rently filling the pos­i­tion. This is a vir­tual res­id­ency, so the Poet in Res­id­ence will not be required to relocate.” Pays: “The con­tract fee for the poet in res­id­ence will be $9,000 (sub­ject to con­firm­a­tion of fund­ing), which will be paid on a monthly basis. Stand­ard writer’s fee rates will apply for pub­lic­a­tion in Arc.” No application fee. Deadline: February 15, 2013.
  • Speaking of poetry: The University of Iowa’s International Writing Program “is proud to present an online, seven-week poetry writing course this February. The course will include seven live online sessions and will be conducted via virtual classroom software. The course is free of charge and all sessions will be conducted in English.” Participation will be limited to fifteen writers, and international writers “are encouraged to apply.” Deadline: January 28, 2013.
  • Bronx residents: Applications for the BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) Awards are now available. These awards “provide direct support to individual Bronx artists who create literary, media, visual, and performing works of art. 25 BRIO grants of $3,000 each are awarded to Bronx artists. BRIO award winners complete a one-time public service activity.” There is no application fee. Deadline is Friday, January 25, 2013.
  • The River Teeth Nonfiction Conference “is offering four scholarships to students currently enrolled in writing programs (graduate or undergraduate). Registration fees will be waived for the recipients of the scholarships. All other expenses (travel, room, board) are the responsibility of the scholarship recipient.” Apply by March 1.
  • From Carol Tice, of the “Make a Living Writing” blog fame: “[M]y guest-post well is nearly dry, so it’s a good time to pitch me ideas. For those who don’t know, I pay $50 a post (and it’s pretty competitive to get an assignment, so bring your best idea we haven’t covered before!) Read my guidelines first, if you want a chance at getting a post approved.” (NB: I’ve had the good fortune to guest-post for Carol, and I recommend the experience highly!)

  • “The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard is offering a new research and study opportunity: a short-term visiting fellowship for individuals to work on special projects designed to advance journalism.” No application fee. Application deadline: November 19, 2012.
  • Frequencies, “a new biannual journal of artful essays” that “challenge the current non-fiction prescription” is published by Two Dollar Radio. Essay submissions are accepted “on a rolling basis.” Send completed essays only. Pays: “We do pay cash money.” http://twodollarradio.com/frequencies-about.htm (via NewPages.com)
  • “The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation offers its sixth annual summer fiction writing seminar in the ancient town of Sozopol, Bulgaria. The seminar program consists of intensive daily fiction workshops, roundtable discussions, guest lectures and literary readings by faculty and participants. Fiction writers from Bulgaria and fiction writers from English-speaking countries, including but not limited to the U.K. and the U.S., are invited to apply. A total number of ten applicants will be selected for participation and funding.” No application fee. Application deadline is March 15, 2013, for the May 2013 seminar.
  • Coming soon–the November issue of The Practicing Writer. As usual, it will feature an array of no-fee competitions and paying call information. If you’re not yet a subscriber, join us to get your copy quickly!
  • “Considering making a career in literary translation? Already embarked on your course but feel you could do with more help and support? If so, you might be one of the talented emerging translators we’re looking for to participate in the 2013 BCLT Translator Mentoring Scheme (1 January – 30 June 2013). Launched in 2010, the scheme has already produced fourteen mentorship ‘graduates’ in languages ranging from Catalan to Polish. Several of the previous mentees have had work published as a result of contacts made and skills honed during the mentoring process. Mentors and mentees work together in a combination of face to face meetings and also through online communication such as email or Skype. Mentees should expect to commit an average of one day a week to the programme. Each mentee receives receives a bursary of £500 plus reasonable expenses.” No application fee. Apply fast (by October 31, 2012).
  • Louisville Magazine seeks a Staff Writer, the Austin American-Statesman (Texas) is looking for a Social Media Editor, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Md.) is advertising for a Writer/Editor.
