Monday Markets/Jobs/Opportunities for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee contests/competitions and paying gigs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • First up: News from Tin House magazine: “Starting September 1, Tin House will be reading for Spring and Summer, 2013. The Summer issue is open, non-themed. The Spring issue has a theme of “This Means War.” Conflict is at the heart of all stories, and these days it seems that the world’s major conflicts are portrayed in black and white, good and evil. We’re looking for the grey, the messy, the not-so-easily classified. We’re not just looking for work about armed conflict, but domestic, political, ecological, religious, and moral battles. If there is heat, we want to see the fire. The Spring, 2013 deadline is October 31. The Summer, 2013 deadline is January 14.”
  • Next: Interested in winning a copy of the new edition of the Guide to Literary Agents? Check the link for details.
  • This looks like a useful list for creative-nonfiction writers: book contests and publishers. Note that the contests all seem to charge fees, but many of the publishers appear to welcome submissions fee-free. (Hat tip to Hippocampus Magazine.)
  • Attention, Canadian writers: News about a new fiction prize (no fee indicated). Deadline: October 1.
  • The new academic year brings a wave of academic job announcements: The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (Minn.) invite applications for an Assistant Professor of English (Creative Writing), tenure-track. “The 3/3 teaching load includes upper-division and lower-division literature and writing courses in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.” The Department of English at Rollins College (Fla.) seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Creative Non-Fiction. The University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Literature (Creative Writing [Poetry] and Literature). California State University, San Bernardino, is advertising for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (Creative Writing-Fiction). The University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, is looking for an Assistant Professor of English (Creative Writing-Fiction). The University of Mary Washington seeks an Assistant Professor of English (Fiction Writing). DePauw University (Ind.) is looking for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (Fiction Writing).
  • And another academic job announcement, from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University (Md.): “We are seeking to fill two positions, one in poetry, one in fiction, both at the assistant-professor level. Interested applicants should have at least one book of poetry or fiction published, and another near completion. Teaching responsibilities (two courses per semester) will include undergraduate and–eventually–graduate courses. Ability and experience in the teaching of writing and literature are requisite to the job. The Writing Seminars, one of the oldest graduate programs in creative writing, offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry and fiction, as well as an undergraduate major. Our program leans toward the aesthetic and intellectual rather than genre and popular—ends of the literary spectrum.”
  • The Sitka Center for Art & Ecology (Ore.) is looking for a Program Manager, the International Reporting Project (Washington) seeks a Program Manager (International Media Trips), and the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University (Mass.) is advertising for a Writer.
