Monday Markets/Jobs/Opportunities for Writers
Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
“The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard is offering a new research and study opportunity: a short-term visiting fellowship for individuals to work on special projects designed to advance journalism.” No application fee. Application deadline: November 19, 2012.
Frequencies, “a new biannual journal of artful essays” that “challenge the current non-fiction prescription” is published by Two Dollar Radio. “The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation offers its sixth annual summer fiction writing seminar in the ancient town of Sozopol, Bulgaria. The seminar program consists of intensive daily fiction workshops, roundtable discussions, guest lectures and literary readings by faculty and participants. Fiction writers from Bulgaria and fiction writers from English-speaking countries, including but not limited to the U.K. and the U.S., are invited to apply. A total number of ten applicants will be selected for participation and funding.” No application fee. Application deadline is March 15, 2013, for the May 2013 seminar.

“Considering making a career in literary translation? Already embarked on your course but feel you could do with more help and support? If so, you might be one of the talented emerging translators we’re looking for to participate in the 2013 BCLT Translator Mentoring Scheme (1 January – 30 June 2013). Launched in 2010, the scheme has already produced fourteen mentorship ‘graduates’ in languages ranging from Catalan to Polish. Several of the previous mentees have had work published as a result of contacts made and skills honed during the mentoring process. Mentors and mentees work together in a combination of face to face meetings and also through online communication such as email or Skype. Mentees should expect to commit an average of one day a week to the programme. Each mentee receives receives a bursary of £500 plus reasonable expenses.” No application fee. Louisville Magazine seeks a Staff Writer, the Austin American-Statesman (Texas) is looking for a Social Media Editor, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Md.) is advertising for a Writer/Editor.

“Roosevelt University [Ill.] invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position, to begin Fall 2013, from experienced fiction writers to direct our thriving creative writing program uniquely focused on the novel with specializations in narrative and the lyric essay. Candidates should have at least one book of fiction from a major or midlist press; additional publications in creative non-fiction are highly desirable. Our program also oversees publication of Oyez Review; thus experience with literary magazine production is also a plus, though not required.”
“The Department of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside seeks to make a tenure-track appointment in Fiction with secondary specialties in Historical Fiction and Narratology. Position includes undergraduate and graduate teaching, 4.5 courses per year on the quarter system, thesis supervision and standard non-teaching duties. Requirements: MFA or equivalent, at least one full-length book, strong teaching experience.”
“The Department of English at Dickinson College [Penn.] invites applications from actively publishing fiction writers to fill a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in fiction writing, with a possibility for a third year. The five-course-per-year teaching load includes fiction workshops at the intermediate and advanced levels, a team-taught, mixed-genre introductory creative-writing workshop, an introductory course in reading fiction, and an upper-level literature course on “the craft of the short story.” The candidate will also help full-time faculty members with hosting visiting writers. M.F.A or Ph.D., publication (ideally, a book of fiction; minimally, a substantial record of fiction publications in major literary journals), and teaching experience required. The ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate.”
Job announcement from Fitchburg State University (Mass.) for an Assistant Professor of English Studies: “Full time, tenure track position in English Studies, with specialty in creative writing (poetry and fiction). Additional background in African American literature and emergent ethnic American literatures desirable. Courses include but are not limited to Fiction Writing, Poetry Writing, First-Year Writing and the development of new courses that support the English Studies curriculum.
“Phillips Academy (Mass.) seeks a writer-in-residence to fill the Roger F. Murray Chair in Creative Writing. This is a two-year appointment to begin in September 2013, with a possibility of renewal for up to two more years. Responsibilities include teaching two seminar classes (maximum 15 students per class) in creative writing per term. Minimum requirements include at least one published book and demonstrated success in the teaching of creative writing at the university or secondary level.”
“The Department of English at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching-stream appointment in Creative Writing. The appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer and will commence July 1, 2013. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of publishing fiction and/or creative nonfiction, or the production of original plays or screenplays.”
