Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The Freeman is now accepting poetry submissions to be considered for publication in the print magazine and online. Each issue is thematic, so please consult the schedule below for the theme(s) for which we are currently accepting submissions. We will give preference to poetry that relates to the theme. Currently accepting submissions for: “Cities” issue: Please send poems on the theme of cities by May 1, 2013.” Pays: $50/poem, plus one copy.   • The Native Arts & Culture Foundation is accepting fellowship applications until May 3. Awards run up to $20,000. Applications in the literature field this year are welcome from poets and fiction writers. No entry fee indicated. NB: “Native artists are defined as members of federally and state-recognized US tribes, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian communities.”
  • Residency opportunity in Geneva, Switzerland: “The Embassy of Foreign Artists offers residencies for periods of 3 or 6 months and can host four residencies at a time. Three grants are provided by the Canton and Republic of Geneva. An additional grant is made available to local associations and institutions. Grants are allocated by a jury twice yearly on the basis of projects submitted. (Next deadline: April 30th 2013) The residency includes: a private room as well as a working space and access to common areas shared with other residents; a residency of three or six months (the desired length of stay must be specified on the Application Questionnaire); a grant of CHF 1’500 per month for the duration of the stay.” I see no application fee indicated.   • Attention, Australian writers: The editors of Stilts are looking “for four pieces of long-form writing that explore ideas of ritual. We’re interested in fiction and non and whatever lies in between. We’re after pieces between 6,000 and 8,000 words. The four chosen writers will each be paid $250 and will receive close editorial support to develop their piece.” Deadline is June 30, 2013. (via @Duotrope)
  • Lesley University (Mass.) seeks an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing (should have an MFA in poetry or fiction).
  • Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) is advertising for an Assistant Professor of English. “Ph.D. in English required. Specialization in Writing Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction.”
  • The Loft Literary Center (Minneapolis) seeks an Adult Education Manager, Cornell University (New York) is looking for an Events Coordinator for its Creative Writing Program, Salon (New York) is looking for a Culture Editor, and the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP; New York) plans to hire a Director of Programs and Strategic Communications.
