Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Virginia Quarterly Review is open for submissions! They’ll consider fiction, poetry, and nonfiction (and nonfiction pitches) until August 1. Pays: “For poetry, we pay $200 per poem; for poems longer than 50 lines, the payment is higher. For prose, we generally pay approximately 25 cents per word, depending on length. For investigative reporting, we pay at a higher rate, sometimes including pre-approved travel expenses.”
  • “NerdWallet Investing is hosting a writing contest with first, second, and third place cash rewards in order to find out your answers to [questions about Roth IRAs].” You can submit “opinion pieces, analytical articles, or anything in between.” The prizes run $500/$300/$200. There’s no entry fee, and the deadline is 9:00pm PDT/midnight EDT on May 12, 2013. Be sure to read all of the fine print, including the note that “NerdWallet Investing will publish all submissions that we deem relevant to our readers….”
  • Printerpix is holding a new poetry contest: “Anything based on ‘Sunshine’ is acceptable as long as you can create some warmth and comfort to all those who read your poem. It can be written in any style, in no more than 45 lines and must be 100% original. When you enter the Printerpix poetry competition, you stand a chance of winning an Amazon voucher worth $100! And a 20″x 16″ canvas!” There is no entry fee, and the deadline is Friday morning, May 24, 2013. Open to entrants from the US/UK/Europe.
