Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • “The ABA Journal is accepting entries for the 2013 ABA Journal/Ross Writing Contest for Legal Short Fiction….Entries should be original works of fiction of no more than 7,500 words that illuminate the role of the law and/or lawyers in modern life. The winner will receive a prize of $3,000. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. CDT, July 31, 2013….Entries may be unpublished, or published no earlier than January 1, 2012. Entries posted publicly on the Internet, regardless of the forum or venue, will be considered published for the purposes of the contest.” NB: “The author of any work submitted will retain copyrights to their entry. However, by submitting a work for consideration in the contest, the author grants the American Bar Association and/or the ABA Journal the non-exclusive and perpetual right to publish the work in its periodicals, books, anthologies, ebooks, audiobooks or any other publication platform, whether print or digital.” No entry fee indicated.   • The Sun is offering two full scholarships to writers who can make a strong case that they would benefit from [its upcoming California retreat] but are unable to afford it. Scholarships cover lodging, meals, and tuition for the weekend.” No application fee indicated. Deadline: August 1, 2013.(via CRWROPPS-B)
  • “The University of Toledo [Ohio] Department of English invites applications for a full-time instructional position (lecturer) beginning mid-August 2013. The position is a continuing non-tenure-track appointment, renewable yearly, contingent upon satisfactory performance and instructional need. The lecturer will teach 24-30 credit hours per academic year of introductory and advanced creative writing courses, and other courses as assigned. Specialties in poetry and creative non-fiction preferred. Experience in teaching creative writing is required plus either an MFA or status as a published author.” Application deadline: July 31, 2013.
  • “The School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, invites applications for a one academic year appointment as a Lecturer in Writing, starting August 2013, to teach courses in Poetry, Fiction, Non-fiction, Rhetoric, and Expository Writing.”
  • The Nieman Foundation for Journalism (Mass.) is looking for a Programming Assistant
  • “PEN American Center [New York] seeks a Communications Manager to help drive the organization’s press outreach, communications, website, and social media.”
  • Poetry Inside Out seeks Teaching Artists. “New PIO Teaching Artists must participate in a paid 12-hour training session followed by a 16-hour apprenticeship that prepares them to accept placement as a professional Poetry Inside Out Teaching Artist in school sites throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Teaching Artists also receive ongoing professional development and opportunities for creative collaboration in a team, strengthening their practice as artists and teachers.” Application deadline: September 4, 2013.
