Jewish Book Carnival: September 2013

My Machberet is proud to serve as September 2013 host for the Jewish Book Carnival, “a monthly event where bloggers who blog about Jewish books can meet, read, and comment on each others’ posts.” The posts are hosted on a participant’s site on the 15th of each month.

Herewith, this month’s goodies-which also mark the first Carnival of the new year 5774!

  • The Book of Life features a podcast with Deborah Heiligman, whose first teen novel Intentions won the 2013 Sydney Taylor Book Award. Says blogger/podcaster Heidi Estrin: “It’s a very appropriate book for the High Holidays, with its themes of betrayal, choices, and forgiveness.”
  • On forwordsbooks.com, Kathy Bloomfield examines the Nisim B’chol Yom (the blessings for daily miracles), this month focusing on the second blessing – “Who opens the eyes of the blind.” Meantime, for InterfaithFamily.com, she has been focusing on the High Holidays with books for the New Year and Sukkot.
  • On Jewish Books for Kids, Barbara Bietz features Jacqueline Jules and her book What a Way to Start a New Year.
  • Jewaicious reviews We Were Europeans: A Personal History of a Turbulent Century, by Werner M. Loval.
  • Klempner’s Kosher Words celebrates a new Jewish year and the arrival of some exciting new Jewish books.
  • Life is Like a Library offers two notable posts: a review of Nosh on This: Gluten-Free Baking from a Jewish-American Kitchen by Linda-Stander-Horl and Tim Horel, and “A Literary Day in Israel,” which includes a visit to Halper’s used book store in Tel Aviv and a walk around Old Yafo (Jaffa harbor).
  • Here on My Machberet, I’ll point you to the most recent Jewish Literary Links post, which offers something of a feast of literary-focused morsels, if I say so myself!
  • Two posts as well from the Jewish Book Council’s blog The ProsenPeople: Lauren Grodstein shares her views on “The French During the Holocaust and the Complications of History,” and Michael Lavigne explores “What You Lose Writing a Novel.”
  • Rhapsody in Books reviews novelist Dara Horn’s latest, A Guide for the Perplexed.
  • Shiloh Musings situates Zeh Kaporosi: The Custom Of Kaporos, by Avrohom Reit, “a book about the Jewish minhag, custom of Kaparot.”
  • Two posts from The Whole Megillah: an interview with Ellen Bari, author of The Tattered Prayer Book, and an interview with the publisher of Bari’s book, Stephen Feuer of Gihon River Press.

Thanks so much to all of the participating bloggers!
