Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • This year’s deadline for the Nelson Algren Awards for short fiction is January 31. Contest is open to residents of the United States. All entries must be fiction, less than 8,000 words. “One grand prize winner will receive $3,500. Four finalists will each receive $1,000. Five runners-up will each receive $500. Total value of all prizes: $10,000.” Check the detailed terms/conditions for additional information.”
  • The sixth annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Competition is receiving submissions until midnight (EST) on January 31. “Selected poems will be published in the [Nazim Hikmet] Festival Chapbook as well as on-line at the Festival website. Festival winners will receive an award of $100 and will be invited to read their poems” at the festival, which will take place this year on April 13 in Cary, N.C. No entry fee.
  • “This winter Rescue Press will consider book-length prose submissions for our Open Prose Series, which publishes one work a year of nonfiction, fiction, or sui generis prose. The series aims to support singular prose works and the wider discussion of contemporary literary prose; the first book in the series, Anne Germanacos’s Tribute, will be released in spring 2014. We invite you to submit a manuscript to our open reading period between January 1 and January 31, 2014.” Reading fee is optional.
  • If you’re a resident of Oregon (or Southwest Washington state) and you have a “quiet novel” manuscript on hand, you might want to look into Forest Avenue Press, now open for submissions. (h/t Liz Prato)
  • “The Château de Lavigny is situated in a small village between Geneva and Lausanne, overlooking Lake Geneva and the Alps. It is able to host a maximum of six writers per four-week session. Writers are provided with a private room and all of their meals. Common areas of the Château are shared as well as the gardens. Apart from occasional readings and exchanges with local literary guests, residents are left on their own to write in peace and beauty. Since the number of participants is small and the geographical distribution quite varied, the importance of exchanges is one of the benefits, challenges, and defining qualities of the experience. Each session is of four weeks duration.” Applications for the 2014 season must be completed by February 1, 2014. No application fee. NB: Per the application’s space for “books published that qualify,” this residency program seems to be limited to authors of published books.
  • The Science in Society Journalism Awards provide “separate cash prizes of $2,500 for writing judged best in each of five categories: books, commentary or opinion, science reporting, science reporting for a local or regional audience, and longform science reporting. All prizes will be platform independent. We’re open to entries from print, broadcast, and online journalists. Winners and their publishers/broadcasters will also receive certificates. The 2014 awards will be presented at an awards dinner the weekend of October 18, 2014, in Columbus, Ohio. Reasonable travel and hotel expenses of the award winners will be reimbursed.” Submitted work “must be written or spoken in English, intended for the lay adult, and first published or broadcast in North America between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2013.” No entry fee. Deadline: 11:59 p.m. Eastern on February 1, 2014. NB: “Entries should exhibit clear relevance to society as a whole. Pure science articles, without that relevance, will not be considered.” (via the WritersMarket.com newsletter)

Such a good list today! Thank you. (FYI: Unless I’m missing something, the same Rescue Press offering appears twice.)
