Friday Finds for Writers

Treasure ChestWriting-related resources, news, and reflections to enjoy over the weekend.

  • Celeste Ng reflects on writing the omniscient narrator.
  • I’m far too old to enter this New York Times-organized contest for budding student editorialists–but I did appreciate the accompanying video with its “7 tips for writing an effective editorial.”
  • From a source quite likely new to many of you (Fiction and Film for French Historians): “Six works to consider at the start of the commemorations of World War I: two classics, two more recent films that brought new perspectives on the war, and two works fresh off the presses.”
  • Jason Allen Ashlock interviews Jane Friedman, mainly about that excellent new magazine called Scratch.
  • Laura Maylene Walter shares some insights gleaned from her experience as assistant fiction editor for Mid-American Review.
  • Have a wonderful weekend.

I especially enjoyed the Laura Maylene notes about being an editor at MAR. Puts this difficult process of submitting your best work a little more in perspective. There’s another good human at the other end of the seesaw.

        Very much so, Marlena!

The Celeste Ng essay was thought provoking. Before I read it, I didn’t notice that I’ve never written a story or book with an omnipresent third person POV. And it made me think of why. I think my why is different than hers (I think I’m a pretty bossy person, actually and unfortunately) but I wouldn’t have even thought about it if it hadn’t been for that essay. It’s making me want to try my hand at the omnipresent third person POV (can we just call it OTPPOV?). Thanks for sharing the link. The Jane Friedman interview was interesting, too.

Sure, Becca–we can call it whatever you’d like! 😉
