Monday Markets for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Mystery Writing Competition (for short stories that feature a lawyer as a main character) from Hofstra Law/Professor Alafair Burke/Mulholland Books. Cash prizes ($500/$200/$100) and online publication/promotion for the first-prize winner. No entry fee. Deadline: May 1, 2014. (via Evan Guilford-Blake)
  • “Starting this July, the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods will begin offering monthlong fellowships for visiting writers.” There is no application fee. Deadline: May 1, 2014. (Thanks to my day-job co-worker Ken for pointing this one out to me!)
  • Also with a May 1 deadline: the Artist in Residence program run by the Arts Center of Yates County (N.Y.): “The program is open to visual artists, creative writers, performance artists and interdisciplinary artists who can demonstrate professional standing in their field.” Residency offers 10 days at the Sunny Point facility on Keuka Lake. “Travel and meals are not included.” Residency dates for 2014 are June 28 to July 7 or September 6 to September 15. No application fee indicated.
  • Norfolk Collegiate School (Va.) seeks an Upper School English teacher.
  • “Wells College [N.Y.] invites applications for a visiting assistant professor of English beginning August 2014. This is a 2-year appointment with possible conversion to tenure track. Ph.D. preferred (MFA considered) as is excellent teaching and a commitment to the liberal arts. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in 19th and 20th century British and American Poetry, poetry writing and creative non-fiction writing, contribute to the College’s general education curriculum Sustainable Community, and to administer a vibrant visiting writers program.”
  • Across the pond, the University of East Anglia is “seeking to appoint a distinguished writer to lead the poetry strand of the internationally famous UEA Creative Writing programme. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role within a buoyant and exploratory School.”(h/t B.J. Epstein)
  • Bosque School (N.M.) is looking for a Middle School English Teacher.
  • The Sun is searching for an Associate Publisher to direct business operations, finance, and personnel. We also have openings for a Manuscript Editor and an Editorial Assistant. All three positions are full-time and based in our Chapel Hill, North Carolina, office.”
  • The Harvard Graduate School of Education (Massachusetts) is looking for a Communications and Marketing Writer.
  • The American Association of University Professors (AAUP; Washington) seeks an Editorial Assistant.
  • Also in Washington: “TheAtlantic.com is looking for a social-media and engagement editor.”
  • The New York Public Library is advertising for a Social Media Marketing Associate.
  • Jessica Wilbanks notified me about these two opportunities, which are both work-from-home positions: Communications Manager (Marketing) and Communications Manager (Publications), for TNTP (The New Teacher Project).
