Monday Markets for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The June issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers this weekend, and it is FILLED with no-fee competitions and paying submission calls. Missed it? The current issue is also online.
  • “The Review of English Studies is now inviting entries for its 2014 Essay Prize. The RES Essay Prize aims to encourage scholarship amongst postgraduate research students in Britain and abroad. The essay can be on any topic of English literature or the English language from the earliest period to the present.” Winner receives publication, a cash prize of GBP250, GBP250 worth of Oxford University Press books, and a year’s subscription to THE REVIEW OF ENGLISH STUDIES. No entry fee. Deadline: June 30, 2014.
  • From WritersWeekly.com: “We’re out of Success Stories! Have a Freelance Success Story to share? We pay $40 on acceptance, non-exclusive electronic rights only. Success stories run around 300 words but we’re very flexible. Our guidelines are here: http://writersweekly.com/misc/guidelines.php.”
  • Fireside will be open to submissions of flash fiction and short stories from June 1 through June 30th (11:59pm Eastern time)….We plan to be open to submissions several times a year going forward. We’re currently planning to be open in September and January.” What they’re looking for: “original, previously unpublished flash fiction of 1,000 words or less and original, previously unpublished short stories of 1,000 to 4,000 words.(Firm limit.) We pay 12.5 cents per word, with payment on completion of edits. We buy first world publication rights and six-month exclusivity, as well as the right to reprint the story once, non-exclusively, in a Fireside anthology.” Open to lots of genres.   • “The American Scholar, the quarterly magazine published by the Phi Beta Kappa Society, is seeking a paid editorial/digital marketing intern for a 6-month term at 20 hours a week. Due to the small size of the magazine’s staff, this internship is a good opportunity for the right candidate to actively experience what is takes to publish a quarterly magazine and maintain a digital publishing presence.” Position is located in Washington.
  • The University of Houston is looking for an Assistant Director for its creative writing program. (h/t CRWROPPS-B)
  • “The sponsors of Banned Books Week (BBW), a national celebration of the freedom to read, are seeking a part-time Banned Books Week Coalition Coordinator to provide administrative, communications, and outreach assistance.” NB: Although this position is linked to a New York address, “the coordinator will work from home, communicating by computer and telephone.”
  • In New York: “PEN American Center, the largest branch of the world’s leading international literary and human rights organization, seeks a dynamic Membership Engagement Coordinator to help usher in an exciting phase of expansion and strengthening of its literary community.”
  • The Aspen Institute (Washington) is looking for an Assistant Editor and Public Affairs Associate.
