Monday Markets for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The deadline for the winter issue of Contrary is coming up on December 1. “For original commentary, fiction, and poetry, Contrary Magazine pays $20 per author per issue, regardless of the number of works or nature of the submission.”
  • “Gilman School, an independent boys’ school, announces its search to award the 20th Tickner Writing Fellowship to an emerging writer of fiction or creative non-fiction or playwright. Responsibilities include teaching one senior elective in creative writing each semester, organizing a series of readings, advising the literary magazine, and working one-to-one with students in the Tickner Writing Center. The Tickner Fellow teaches every other day, affording time for independent writing projects.” The fellowship provides a salary of $35,000, plus full benefits package. No application fee. Deadline: December 9, 2014.
  • Berfrois Poetry Contest: “Between midnight on November 30, 2014 and 11:59:59 pm GMT on Sunday December 31, 2014, poets may submit to Berfrois, using its online submission manager, a single, original, poem in English which is not a translation, but may be in any mode or form, up to 300 lines….By midnight on January 9, 2014, Berfrois will have read all the submissions and selected poems by 10 finalists for a short list. These 10 poems will be published on Berfrois during the first few weeks of January 2014. Berfrois may suggest that the writers of the short-listed poems make changes to these poems before posting. The writers of the ten short-listed poems will be given one week, until midnight on January 16, 2014, to submit 4 more poems each. In the last two weeks of January, Berfrois will read each of the short-listed 5 poem portfolios and select a Poetry Prize Winner. Berfrois will announce the Poetry Prize Winner of the on February 1, 2015. The winning poet will be awarded a prize. The winning portfolio of five poems will be published on Berfrois with an introduction by Daniel Bosch. Berfrois may suggest minor editorial changes be made to this portfolio prior to posting.” NB: Via Twitter, I was able to ascertain that there will be a “small cash prize.” Also, like the original entry, the 4 additional poems must be unpublished.
  • Brilliant Flash Fiction‘s next writing challenge calls for stories on the theme of “Life Is Good.” Maximum 300 words. Prizes: 20 euro first prize (or equivalent amount in your currency), 10 euro second prize, 5 euro third prize. Deadline: January 15, 2015. No entry fee. (via FlashFictionFlash)
  • I’ve been waiting for the application details to share this new opportunity with you. And the Amy Levy Prize, marking the 125th anniversary of the death of Anglo-Jewish author Amy Levy, is now open for submissions. This is an international prize for “young, unpublished writers” (“young” being defined as 30 years of age or younger). Entrants should submit an unpublished piece of fiction on a Jewish theme by Sunday, March 1, 2015. There is no entry fee. Prize: £1000, a week-long writing retreat, a mentor for one year, and a residency at JW3.”
  • From the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis: “We’re now accepting proposals for summer 2015 youth classes and 2015 online classes. We’re also looking for proposals for our 2015 Children’s and Young Adult Literature Conference (due December 4). So share your writing expertise. Submit your proposal to teach at the Loft!”

We seek a candidate with a specialization in either poetry or fiction, with a demonstrated strong secondary specialization in the other genre. This position commences Fall 2015.”
  • “The Department of English and program in Creative Writing (fiction) at the University of Virginia invites applications from fiction writers of exceptional international stature for the position of Kapnick Distinguished Writer-in-Residence in either the fall term of 2015 or the spring term of 2016. The inspiration for this position came from the example of William Faulkner, who was the Balch Writer in Residence at the University from 1956-1958. The compensation for this post will be commensurate with the very highest levels of literary distinction and international prestige.
