Monday Markets for Writers: No Fees, Paying Gigs

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • From Washington City Paper: “Got stories? Let’s have ‘em. We’re running our third annual Fiction Issue on Jan. 8, 2015, so if you’d like to kick off 2015 with a little Washington City Paper ink, this is your chance. The skinny: We’re looking for good, unpublished stories about the District that are no longer than about 2,000 words. (Will we pay for the stories we run? Yes. Barely, but yes.) To get a sense of what we’ve liked in the past, check out the last two issues. But past performance is no guarantee of future results, as they say: We want to be surprised and impressed. We’re looking for fresh ideas, new voices, clever conceits. And great writing. So dust off that draft and start polishing its prose. Send your unpublished story…by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1. And good luck.” (via writingcareer.com)
  • Canada-based Ryga welcomes submissions of previously unpublished poetry, prose and short plays that coincide with our editorial mission….” Pays: $100 (presumably $CAD). (via placesforwriters.com)
  • From the Los Angeles Times: “L.A. Affairs is our weekly column about the current dating scene in and around Los Angeles — and finding romance in a wired world. If you’ve got a story to tell, we want to hear it. We pay $300 per published column. Past columns and submission guidelines are at latimes.com/laaffairs.” (via @susanshapironet)

  • “The Post and Courier, a growing family-owned news organization based in beautiful Charleston, S.C., is looking for a talented writer and journalist to cover local entertainment and pop culture.”
