Monday Markets for Writers: No Fees, Paying Gigs

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The latest Win a Trip with Nick [Kristof] Contest has been announced. As Kristof explains: “Since 2006, I’ve been taking a student with me once a year on a reporting trip to the developing world. The aim is to generate interest in global poverty issues both with the contest and with the blogging and videos that the winner will contribute to the New York Times website.” This year, the contest “is open to students enrolled in an American college or university, either as an undergraduate or graduate.” NB: “Your expenses will be covered, but there’s no cash award.” No application fee, either. Apply by January 7, 2015.
  • The Camargo Foundation Core Fellowship Program (France) “welcomes applications from individuals from all countries, nationalities, and career levels,” including “artists, in all disciplines…” and “leading thinkers in the arts and humanities.” Fellowship residencies last from four to eleven weeks. NB:”A stipend of 600US$ per month is available, as is funding for basic transportation to and from Cassis for the residency. In the case of air travel, basic coach class booked far in advance is covered.” Apply by January 13, 2015. No application fee.
  • For its summer 2015 issue, Ruminate is now open to fiction submissions and to book reviews. NB: “Ruminate publishes work with both subtle and overt associations to the Christian faith as well as work that has no direct association.” Pays: $15/printed page (fiction) and $15/400 words (reviews).
  • Paid internships at Tablet magazine! (New York)
  • “Words without Borders seeks a highly organized and talented editor for its online monthly magazine of international literature, wordswithoutborders.org.” This job is in New York. (via The Review Review)
  • Pacific Standard is looking for a staff writer to join our growing digital team. This full-time position with benefits (health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, and an employee-sponsored 403(b) plan) will be based out of our offices in Santa Barbara, California; remote work is not an option.” (via Lee Skallerup Bessette)
  • “Southern Utah University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of English Creative Nonfiction Writing.”
  • Indiana State University is advertising for a “tenure-track assistant professor, beginning August 15, 2015, to teach courses in poetry writing, introductory creative writing, and other English courses depending on the secondary specialty, plus undergraduate advising. Secondary expertise in early British literature, American literature, or rhetoric/composition is desirable.”
