Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

A Literary Offering

A few days ago, I received this message from Nancy Scott:

“I am the managing editor of U.S.1 Worksheets, the journal of the U.S.1 Poets’ Cooperative in New Jersey. [Every] year we give away extra copies of the journal to a worthy creative writing program, either a non-profit or school short on funds that would appreciate such a donation. We will pay the postage for shipping. Interested parties can contact the journal at us1poets(at)gmail(dot)com. Our website is us1poets.com.”

If you’re interested, please do contact the journal directly. (I’m just the messenger here!)

Travel Plans

I finally went ahead and booked my airline tickets so that I can drop in on the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) conference, which for 2015 will be held in Minneapolis. Since AWP rejected the panel proposal I was part of, I’m not actually registering for the conference. In fact, I’ll be in Minneapolis less than 48 hours, total. I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and spending much of my time on the Saturday of the conference wandering the Bookfair, thanks to the day pass that I’ll be purchasing on-site.

Concluding Thoughts: Happy Anniversary

This week marks the fourth anniversary of the publication of Quiet Americans. Remarkably, people still seem to be reading it! And since the book was published on the anniversary of the day my paternal grandparents married, it’s their anniversary too. Enjoy this glimpse into their wedding day.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Dreifus (my paternal grandparents) prepare to cut their wedding cake: January 19, 1941.

You may well know this already, but if not the late Dannie Abse’s poem
“Epithalamion” is beautiful. You can read it and also hear him recite it here: http://www.poetryarchive.org/poem/epithalamion

Best wishes on a double anniversary!
