Sunday Sentence

In which I participate in David Abrams’s “Sunday Sentence” project, sharing the best sentence I’ve read during the past week, “out of context and without commentary.”

It was held in the municipal hall, and on that day there were snow flurries as fine as wedding lace.

Source: Stephen King, “A Death,” in The New Yorker. See also this interview with King about the story.

  1. Erika,
I had to comment because I read the same story this past week, and I read the very sentence aloud to my husband, as I was struck by King’s awesome description of snow. I continued reading silently. During the second reading, I ended up reading many passages aloud to my husband…he puts up with my analyzing of pieces and words & phrases that amaze me. (He’s a keeper; this June marks our 26th wedding anniversary.)

Kathleen, he is definitely a keeper! Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary.

As for the story, I agree with you–this was one case where I knew I’d have to pick among many excellent choices for the Sunday Sentence. In fact, I put the story aside to reread and evaluate more carefully in another sitting. I ended up with this one, but I could have equally chosen so many others.

    Good one!
