Monday Markets for Writers: No Fees. Paying Gigs.

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Deadline approaching (April 15) for Rattle magazine’s Scientists issue. Details and pay rates here. Remember also that Rattle‘s “Poets Respond” features, each week, “one poem online that has been written about a current event that took place the previous week. This is an effort to show how poets react and interact to the world in real time, and to enter into the broader public discourse. To help us stay organized, we request that these poems only be sent to us through the Submittable portal. The deadline for submissions each week is midnight Friday. Payment is $25 and a one-year subscription.” Same link as above for details.
  • Midnight Breakfast is currently open for fiction and nonfiction submissions. “On a practical level, we’re looking for unpublished work in the range of 1,000-10,000 words. On a conceptual level, we want to be wowed. Nothing excites us more than a good story with emotional depth. We believe everyone has a story to tell and we want to share as many of these, from as diverse a selection of experiences, as we can.” Pays: “We’re currently able to offer $50 if we select your work for publication in Midnight Breakfast.” (via @LisaMecham, recent contributor)
  • “Hudson Whitman/Excelsior College Press is opening a call for stories of coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and the personal aftermath created by these wars. The call is open to those who have served, as well as their families, spouses, relatives, and friends. Many popular books focus on combat – war made visible, from the outside. We are seeking stories that help us comprehend the inside, the powerful yet often invisible events that shape the hours, days, nights, weeks, months, and years after coming home.” Nonfiction only for this anthology. Deadline: May 1, 2015. Pays: “Writers selected for the anthology will each receive $200, publication, and two complimentary copies.”
  • “Earlham College [Indiana] invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing for the 2015-16 academic year. This is a full-time, one-year appointment in the English Department, beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. The position is renewable for up to two additional years.”
  • “The Department of English and Theatre and the Bluegrass Writers Studio at Eastern Kentucky University invite applications for a one-year, visiting assistant professorship, with a specialization in creative writing (fiction). The successful candidate will hold an MFA or Ph.D., have a published book or substantial publications in fiction, specialize in fiction writing, and show evidence of the ability to teach in another genre, creative nonfiction, poetry, and/or hybrid forms. Expertise in one or more of the following is strongly preferred: Young Adult, LGBT, African-American, Asian-American, Native American, Latino/a, Caribbean, or other under-represented world literatures. Teaching responsibilities include on-campus undergraduate courses in creative writing, literature and general education courses in English; online courses for the MFA program; teaching in the MFA winter residency; and serving on MFA theses committees.”
  • World Literature Today (Oklahoma) seeks a Book Review Editor.
  • Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington is advertising for an Events Logistics Coordinator (and for several other positions).

  1. Alas, as of this writing, the submissions page at Midnight Breakfast says, “Unfortunately, our writing submissions are currently closed.”

    1. Erika Dreifus says:

Thanks for the update, Peter. As of the writing of the post, however, that note was not there, as far as I can remember.
