Speaking of Fig Tree Books: Notice who has published three of the nine books on JTA’s summer reading list!
My weekend plans include catching up on Jerome Charyn’s posts for the Jewish Book Council “Visting Scribe” series.
The Forwardseeks your help in finding “the best new voices in Jewish music.”
“An alarming number of poor souls among our brethren seem to feel that all they require for a genuine Jewishness is Woody Allen and Philip Roth and Jerry Seinfeld.” Just one of many eye-catching lines from Leon Wieseltier, via Tablet.
Oy, Leon Wieseltier – do YOU ever need to move to Israel!
I am absolutely not sneering at your comments. I understand your concern about increasingly limited Jewish cultural experiences (best general description I can come up with) that lead to an alarming narrowing of Jewish identity.
It seems to me that the only solution to this in the long run is living in a place where the entire context of your life is Jewish. This is the solution I chose almost 40 years ago, and I’m not sorry.
For the record, I am not “religious”, don’t live in anywhere most people would describe as “occupied territories”, and work in a profession where one’s cultural identity is not terribly relevant. I am no sort of “professional Jew” at all, but every day I enjoy living in a milieu where Jewish cultural references are understood by everyone.

It feels great.
Always appreciate hearing from you, Ann.
