Monday Markets for Writers: No Fees, Paying Gigs

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • New contest from Work Stew: “Describe a moment on the job, real or imagined, when you realized you made a mistake. A terrible, terrible mistake.” 600 words, maximum. Deadline: midnight PST on August 15, 2015. No entry fee. Prize: “$200 for the winner, to be announced on August 22, 2015. The winning entry, and perhaps some other entries, will be published here on Work Stew.”
  • Story|Houston, which “was founded to encourage and support developing writers in the Houston area and beyond,” is now accepting submissions in short fiction and creative nonfiction for its fall issue. Pays: $200/published story. No deadline indicated. (via WritingCareer.com)
  • From Matthew Salesses: “I am looking for essays by writers of color who teach creative writing. The Offing would like to do a back-to-school month for the Insight section on how the workshop and/or MFA programs can be improved for writers of color. What do you do that works now? What can we learn from each other? Less think piece, more practical resource.” NB: The Offing does not charge a fee for “Insight” submissions. Pays: $50 (“Upon publication, contributors will be paid a $20–$50 fee, depending on department and number/length of works published ($20 for a Micro; $25+ for a poem; $50 for all other departments.”) No deadline indicated, but if this is a back-to-school feature, my guess is that you should hurry if interested.
  • “Editorial Projects in Education seeks a Web-savvy intern to support the editors of the opinion section of Education Week, the respected, independent newspaper of record for K-12 education. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for a current student or recent graduate to gain online (and print) experience in a busy news organization. The internship entails working closely with the editors in the expansion of the Commentary section of our award-winning website, edweek.org, which edits and publishes opinion essays on education policy.” This internship in Bethesda, Maryland, pays $10/hour.
  • “Columbia College Hollywood, a four year liberal arts college in Tarzana, California, focusing on film, television, and new media, is seeking a Writers Workshop instructor. In this freshman course, students increase their ability to write and use language through ongoing writing exercises and essays that connect with their cinema studies. Students will learn how to make a stronger rational case for their perspective in essays and critiques, learn how to write a strong synopsis, and also work on such practical writing exercises as various forms of business letters.”
  • The Loft (Minneapolis) is currently accepting proposals from those who wish to teach Winter 2016 courses in person and/or online. Apply by August 7.
  • The Loft is also accepting applications for a position as Administrative Assistant.
  • “Smithsonian Magazine’s website, Smithsonian.com, seeks 2 enterprising assistant web editors, one in science and innovation and one in the humanities, to join the web editorial team in our Washington, D.C. office.”
  • Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is looking for a Writer.
