Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Good News (Which Shall Remain Mysterious, for Now)

By far the best writing-related news I’ve heard this week has nothing to do with my own work. I am currently sworn to secrecy, but I promise that I will share this news and all of its happy sequelae as soon as I am able to do so. Let’s just say that I feel like raising a big virtual glass of champagne right now.

Seriously, as far as I’m concerned, this is the highlight of my week. Maybe my month. Maybe longer.

New Meaning to “Challenge Grant”

No, I’m not talking about someone being willing to match whatever I’m able to cobble together (although that would be nice). I’m talking about the challenge of working on a grant proposal.

Again, I’m going to go light on the specifics. Suffice to say that I’m currently working on an application for a grant connected with my poetry manuscript-in-progress. And I’m finding it to be quite a challenge.

There, vent over!

At the Day Job

As per usual, things are hopping over at Fig Tree Books. At some point today (Wednesday), I will hit the “send” key, and the August newsletter will go out; most of the recent happenings—including a starred Library Journal review for our next release, Ben Nadler’s The Sea Beach Line—will be summarized there.

All of our newsletters are archived on the FTB website, so I hope you’ll click over to take a look (and subscribe, if you have not yet done so already). Thanks!

Now it can be told! I am thrilled to share that my friend Rachel Hall has won the latest BkMk Press/G.S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction, for HEIRLOOMS, selected by Marge Piercy. I love this book, and I cannot wait for all of you to have the chance to read it. http://www.newletters.org/writers-wanted/BkMk-writing-contests
