Friday Finds for Writers

Treasure Chest
Writing-related resources, news, and reflections to enjoy over the weekend.

  • Maybe you’ve already read this much-circulated “My Writing Education” piece by George Saunders. But if you haven’t yet, you must.
  • About personal essays: “A User’s Guide to Monetizing Feelings (Part I)” by Jamie Lauren Keiles.
  • Coming to Chicago in 2017: the American Writers Museum.
  • Presenting Rebecca Makkai (aka “Advice Person Lady”)’s “Advice for Writers.”
  • And downloaded this week for possible use in my day job (and maybe elsewhere–this blog, perhaps?–too): quite a few of HubSpot’s free holiday stock photos.
  • Have a great weekend, everyone. Happy Halloween!

    1. Seriously? Monetizing Feelings? That title is worth an essay in itself. What a profoundly depressing concept. Put baldly, maybe that is what these essay writers are doing, but…I read an opinion piece once in a prominent publication about General Sell, and everything being monetized. He would have loved/hated this example.

Well, the author isn’t always responsible for the title/headline….

        1. You’re right, good point. That headline really caught my attention. Thanks for a great newsletter, Erika.

    2. I meant Generation Sell, not General Sell….sorry.

Great stuff, as usual! But where is part 2 of the personal essays piece? Thank you!

      1. Erika Dreifus says:

I have been looking for part 2 as well, Beth–not sure if it’s up yet.

    4. Ann-Louise Truschel says:

LOVED Rebecca Makkai’s “Advice for Writers.” How many of us have gotten similar questions and ALWAYS wanted to say what Rebecca did?!

      1. Erika Dreifus says:

        I know what you mean!
