Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • ICYMI: The January issue of The Practicing Writer has gone out to subscribers. As per usual, it’s packed with listings of no-fee contests/competitions and calls from paying litmags and presses.
  • This week also brings the latest post of Cathy’s Comps and Calls, where Cathy Bryant presents no-fee competition and submission opportunities (and does her best to indicate which ones pay).
  • Launching today: The Forge Literary Magazine. And they’re open to prose submissions (fiction and nonfiction). “While we are open to longer pieces, we prefer stories to come in below 3,000 words. We love flash and micro prose. Please send one previously unpublished piece and wait to hear from us before submitting another. Reprints are by solicitation only.” Pays: “We pay, upon publication, $0.05/words up to 1,000 words or minimum $20 and maximum $50. Writers outside the U.S. must be able to receive payment via Paypal.”
  • News from The Tishman Review: “FEE FREE submissions accepted 12:01am 1/5 to midnight 1/9. Reading for 2.2~April: CNF, short fiction, poetry, art.” Pays: “We pay all of our magazine contributors on a sliding scale up to $75, depending upon word count and content. While we realize this is a small payment, our hope is (with continued support and growth) to be able to increase the amount we pay on an annual basis. We pay our contributors through PayPal only. You will need to provide an email address to receive your payment through PayPal. Contributors residing within the U.S.A. will receive one free print copy of the issue in which they appear. All other contributors will receive an e-book copy.”
  • The [New Americans] issue of On Second Thought magazine will focus on the experiences of people who have immigrated to North Dakota. Articles may be first person accounts from new immigrants, historical analysis on immigration in North Dakota, critical reflections on immigration policy, or other approaches to understanding the role of New Americans in our society.” They appear to be open to poetry and prose. “Pieces chosen for publication will appear in both the print and online versions of the 2016 New Americans issue of On Second Thought magazine. The NDHC will pay $250 for selected pieces.” Deadline: January 15, 2016. (via WritingCareer.com)
  • Job at the University of Chicago: “The Events Programming Assistant provides primary event support to the Creative Writing Program and the Program in Poetry and Poetics. The Assistant serves as the part-time administrator to the programs in Creative Writing and Poetry and Poetics, providing primary support for their attendant events series.” NB: “This is a permanent, 20-hour-per-week, benefits-eligible position which runs annually from September 1 through June 30.”
  • The one, for a Program Manager, came in via email: “The Hewnoaks Artist Colony is seeking a part-time administrator to help advance the mission of its summer residency program and to manage the marketing and application processes. The right candidate will have experience with arts administration, use of email programs and social media, and arts application structures. This administrator must understand the residency experience and be passionate about supporting emerging and mid-career artists. Duties will include managing all Hewnoaks communications including social media, fielding questions about Hewnoaks, coordinating the application and jurying processes, notifying and scheduling accepted artists, organizing periodic events or talks, and marketing Hewnoaks and its programs. This position requires 12 hours per week from January through June and 10 hours per week from July through December. Please submit a letter of interest, a resume and three references, saved as one pdf, and email it to: info@hewnoaks.org. The application window will be open from January 1 through January 22, 2016.” NB: I know nothing else about this opportunity–please direct any questions to the organization, not to me!
  • “The Creative Writing Program at New York University seeks a renowned fiction writer of national reputation who will play a leading role within the Creative Writing Program, and will hold a tenured appointment in the Department of English. Position to begin either January 1, 2017 or September 1, 2017, pending final administrative and budgetary approval.”
