Monday Markets & Jobs for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

Quick note: This will likely be the last blog post for the next 10 days or so; I’m taking a brief blogging hiatus. Comments may take longer to be approved over this period, as well. Thanks for your patience!

  • Barrelhouse Books is now open for submissions, until May 27. Please submit only one book manuscript for the reading period (multiple submissions will be deleted, unread). We’ll consider novels, memoirs, essay collections, story collections, or hybrid prose forms. At this time we’re not interested in novellas or chapbook-length collections.”
  • FYI: The next issue of The Practicing Writer, packed (as usual) with no-fee, paying opportunities, will go to subscribers the last day of May. Never too late to join us with a free subscription!
  • Aimed toward writers, especially international freelancers, The International Freelancer pays $100 for guest posts.
  • Frieze Writer’s Prize, the annual international award to discover and promote new art critics, is now open for entries. The winner will be commissioned to write a review for frieze and will be awarded GBP£2,000…Aspiring art critics are invited to submit one unpublished review of a recent contemporary art exhibition, which should be 700 words in length.” No entry fee. Deadline: July 18, 2016. NB: “Entrants are allowed a maximum of three previously published pieces of writing on art.”
  • “Artspace Magazine is looking for a market writer/editorial assistant to join full time. The position will involve creating stories, content series, marketing campaigns, and other efforts to contextualize and promote art on the site, as well as conducting interviews and writing features for our award-winning platform. This is a job with tremendous growth potential at an exciting moment in the company’s evolution.” Job location: New York.
  • The Tenement Museum (New York) seeks a part-time Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
  • Assistant Professor of English sought: “Bluffton University [Ohio] invites applications for a full-time; two-year appointment with renewal contingent on success of program, and recruitment, to begin August 2016.” There appears to be preference for a published fiction writer.
  • Georgia College & State University is advertising for a limited-term lecturer in fiction.
