Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

dollar-sign-mdMonday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Now open: Honeysuckle Chapbook Contest. “We are seeking boundary-breaking chapbooks that evoke vivid truths. We want work that takes risks, work that awes. We seek writing that brings us to new understandings about the way the world functions, writing that encourages empathy, writing that connects. We are accepting chapbooks from new, emerging, and established writers.” Prizes: “Each winner will receive $500, print publication, author copies, distribution in bookstores across America, and a jar of berry jam. Finalists may be offered publication at Honeysuckle Press’s discretion.” Judges will be Bhanu Kapil in prose and Saeed Jones in poetry. Deadline: January 1, 2017. No entry fees.   • Intriguing opportunity for emerging Jewish artists (including writers) to gather in Warsaw under the guidance of Asylum Arts and POLIN Museum of the History of the Polish Jews. Apply by October 24. No fees.
  • Attention, young Canadians (ages 18-29). Here’s an essay contest for you, from the Canadian Jewish News. No entry fees. Cash prizes. Deadline: October 27, 2016.
  • Catapult’s online magazine is accepting fiction submissions” until October 31. Welcoming short stories, novel excerpts, flash fiction, and translations. NB: “Preferred word count for submissions is 500 – 6000 words. Writers will receive paid compensation for accepted pieces.”
  • “The Palm Beach Poetry Festival is pleased to announce it will offer three fellowships that provide full workshop tuition and lodging in Delray Beach for the upcoming 13th Annual Palm Beach Poetry Festival, January 16-21, 2017. The fellowships are offered to open the festival workshop doors widely to qualified poets and to insure the festival’s workshops provide an enriching variety of experiences through working with poets from a wide variety of cultures. The three fellowships are: the Palm Beach Poetry Festival African American Fellowship; the CantoMundo Palm Beach Poetry Festival Fellowship; and the Kundiman Palm Beach Poetry Festival Fellowship.” No entry fees.   • Nonfiction call from Twelfth Planet Press: “Octavia Estelle Butler was born on 22 June, 1947, and died in 2006. In celebration of what would have been her 70th birthday in 2017, and in recognition of Butler’s enormous influence on speculative fiction, and African-American literature more generally, Twelfth Planet Press is publishing a selection of letters and essays written by science fiction and fantasy’s writers, editors, critics and fans. We are looking for letters addressed to Butler, which should be between 1000 and 1500 words. We are paying 5cpw up to $USD75 for letters, to be paid on publication. We are looking for World First Publication Rights in English, and exclusivity for the first twelve months of publication.” Deadline: January 8, 2017.   • “Foreword Reviews, a bimonthly print magazine and website devoted to coverage of independently published books, is looking for experienced writers for book reviews. We’ve been around for 18 years, and librarians and booksellers have long relied on us to recommend the best of the indie presses. By ‘indie,’ we mean everything from self-published books to small publishing houses to university presses—any books not produced by the Big 5 publishers. Our reviews are not plot summaries. They are short, objective, well-written critiques of all aspects of a book.” Pays: $50 per review (via direct message with Howard Lovy, Executive Editor).

  • In Arizona, “Tucson’s Festival of Books, is seeking a Literary Consultant.” NB: This is a contract position. Note also: “Candidates from Tucson preferred but not required. Hours are based upon deliverables, but average 20-25 hours per week.” (via Stanza)
  • “River Horse Communications, a boutique and growing communications firm specializing in writing and editorial services, is seeking a Communications Associate to work with our team. Our experience spans the fields of journalism and public relations, and our current clients include publishing and media companies, government and private sector consultants, and educational institutions. The Communications Associate will be hired on a contract basis, with the opportunity to become a permanent employee. This is a remote position.”
  • Colgate University invites applications for the Olive B. O’Connor Fellowship in Creative Writing. Writers of nonfiction and poetry who have recently completed an MFA, MA, or PhD in creative writing, and who need a year to complete their first book, are encouraged to apply. The selected writers will spend the academic year (late August 2017 to early May 2018) at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. The fellows will teach one creative writing course each semester and will give a public reading from the work in progress. The fellowship carries a stipend of $40,500 plus travel expenses; health and life insurance are provided.
  • “For appointment beginning in the fall 2017, we seek a writer of poetry to teach two semesters at The George Washington University as the Jenny McKean Moore Writer-in-Washington….The successful candidate will teach a small poetry workshop each semester for members of the metropolitan Washington community. No tuition is charged for these workshops, which are not open to University Students. The successful candidate will also teach two classes, one each semester, for students at The George Washington University. The position is intended to serve as a fellowship for the visiting writer since it involves only a moderate teaching load. The program’s location at a university in the center of Washington should offer attractions for the writer.”
  • “The English Department at Rhodes College [Tennessee] is searching for a fiction writer to join the Department at the level of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), starting August 2017. The 3/2 course load includes introductory through advanced fiction writing workshops as well as literature courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise.”
  • “The MFA Program in Creative Writing-a member of the English Department at Boise State University [Idaho]-invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in fiction writing to start Fall 2017.”
  • Murray State University [Kentucky] is hiring an Assistant Professor in Creative Writing with “a specialization in fiction and secondary expertise in creative nonfiction.”
  • “The Department of Literature and Languages at Christian Brothers University [Tennessee] invites applications for the position of assistant professor. We seek a candidate who specializes in nonfiction writing, in areas such as literary journalism, professional writing/editing, long-form investigative journalism, community-based research and writing, ethnography, memoir, and/or other forms of creative nonfiction. The faculty member will be asked to contribute broadly to the Department of Literature and Languages, especially through teaching 100-level composition courses and other courses such as Business Communications or Developmental Composition.
  • “Marlboro College [Vermont] invites applications from broadly trained, dedicated teachers for a full-time, tenure-track position in Writing. The successful candidate will teach workshops in both fiction and poetry while supporting advanced students through individualized tutorials. In addition, the candidate will share responsibility for Marlboro’s Clear Writing Program, which combines elective, expository writing seminars and courses with a required portfolio. With interest, the candidate could teach in one or more of our interdisciplinary programs such as World Studies, Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies.
  • “The Department of English at Auburn University [Alabama] invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in creative writing, with a specialization in Poetry, to begin Fall 2017.”
  • “The Department of English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a tenure-track assistant, advanced assistant, or associate professor position in Poetry, to begin August 1, 2017. Position: Poetry writing with desirable research and/or teaching interests in prosody and creative nonfiction.”
  • “The English Department of Northeastern University [Massachusetts] invites applications for a position in poetry and poetry writing, to begin in fall of 2017. We are seeking a scholar of modern and contemporary poetry, specializing in issues of race and social justice, who is also a practicing poet. The person appointed in this position will teach modern and contemporary poetry at the graduate and undergraduate levels and creative writing classes at the undergraduate.” Open rank.
