Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers
Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
From The Southern Review: “To celebrate University Press Week 2016 (#UPweek), we are waiving service fees for online fiction and nonfiction submissions November 14–20. Get into the spirit, #readUP, and send us some new work! Remember, we accept mail submissions in all genres and online submissions in fiction and nonfiction. See the complete submission guidelines here.” Pays: “The Southern Review pays $25 per printed page with a maximum payment of $200, plus two copies of the issue in which the work appears and a one-year subscription to The Southern Review.”
“Ploughshares is currently accepting applications for 2017 regular bloggers. Regular bloggers are responsible for pitching and writing roughly one post per month, adhering to a schedule set by the Ploughshares Blog staff. Small compensation is offered on a per-post basis.” Deadline: November 21, 2016.
“In collaboration with the University of Iowa Press, The Iowa Review Series in Fiction will publish two innovative novels per year beginning in 2018. The goal of the new Iowa Review imprint is to publish high-quality literary fiction in a wide range of styles and genres. We accept submissions online at Submittable….At this stage, the editors are not soliciting manuscripts, but rather a brief, 300-word description of the novel and an author biography. We will consider all proposals and contact those authors whose work is of interest. We welcome unpublished work by writers at all stages in their careers. TIR invites writers to submit manuscript proposals for the Series in Fiction from November 1, 2016, through March 1, 2017.”
“The Los Angeles Times is seeking to hire a part-time op-ed assignment editor.”
From the Dallas Morning News: “GuideLive.com and Guide are seeking a part-time music and entertainment writer. The job will require music criticism, music news writing and trend spotting. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally plugged into the music community in Dallas-Fort Worth, fascinated with pop culture and have a personal and professional interest in all genres of music. This person needs to have a strong connection with the D-FW concertgoer and be a voice for the thousands of people who attend concerts. The best candidate will regularly attend concerts and festivals on evenings and weekends. The person hired will also help select and occasionally edit content from other music writers.”
“Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer seeks an experienced, adroit managing editor/writer for speeches, reports, and other public-facing documents to be part of her energetic, collaborative communications team.”
Also in Manhattan: “The Marshall Project seeks a Commentary Editor to conceive, solicit, edit, and publish written and visual commentary on criminal justice issues for www.themarshallproject.org.”
Stony Brook University [New York]’s Creative Writing and Literature Program “seeks a full-time tenure-track or tenured Professor of Fiction to start September 1, 2017. This position carries a 2/2 teaching load of creative writing and literature courses, thesis direction, and advising at both the undergraduate and graduate level on two campuses, located within an hour’s commute of each other. Undergraduate courses are held at Stony Brook; M.F.A. courses are held in Southampton.”
Also at Stony Brook: “Stony Brook’s Creative Writing and Literature Program seeks a full-time tenure-track or tenured Professor of Poetry to start September 1, 2017. “Francis Marion University [South Carolina] is seeking a tenure-eligible assistant professor of English with experience and interest in teaching upper-division creative writing courses in fiction and screenwriting.”
Position advertisement: “Assistant Professor/Publication Adviser in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Murray State University [Kentucky]. This is a tenure-track faculty position with a halftime assignment as student media adviser.”
Position advertisement from Utah Valley University: “Under the direction of the English and Literature Department, the Assistant Professor of English and Literature (emphasis creative writing, poetry in particular but preference given to candidates who write/teach both poetry and prose) designs and teaches four courses per semester in accordance with department and section policies. Teaching assignments will be composition courses and creative writing or literature courses as departmental circumstances require. Serves on department, college, and university committees. Maintains currency in academic field(s) of expertise, produces creative work, engages in professional development activities, and assists in curriculum and program development.”
“The English Program at Rocky Mountain College [Montana] invites applications for Visiting Assistant/ Associate Professor of Creative Writing. We seek applicants with teaching experience and a strong record of publication with a particular emphasis on fiction writing. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two or three classes per semester and engage in creative writing program development and community outreach. This is a visiting position renewable for a second year. Housing on or near campus may be negotiated as a portion of compensation for the position.”
“The Department of English at Middle Tennessee State University invites applications for non-tenure-track visiting faculty of Creative Writing, specializing in fiction. This is a one-year appointment beginning August 1, 2017, with the possibility of renewal after the first year. Teaching may include introductory and advanced creative writing workshops, as well as general education literature courses.”
“The Department of Writing in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College [New York] invites applications for a three-year non-tenure-eligible position with the possibility of renewal beginning August 16, 2017. Ithaca College and the Department of Writing explicitly endorse efforts to increase the diversity of its faculty, so candidates from groups currently underrepresented in the college are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will carry a 3/4 teaching load, teaching primarily Academic Writing and other 100- and 200-level courses, such as Personal Essay, Argument, and/or Introduction to Creative Writing, and demonstrate expertise working in multicultural settings and with topics related to diversity and inclusion. Department service and student advising are expected.”
