Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three Poems in a New Anthology

I haven’t yet received my copy of the book*, but I have three poems in this exciting new anthology, Theories of HER, which was published yesterday. Edited by Candace Habte, the book is described as a “timely collection of poetry, essay, literature and art, to pull back the curtain on what it truly means to be a woman- beyond stereotypes and labels.” (And when I last checked, you could find one of my poems, “Vocabulary Lesson, 1977,” included in the free sample that’s offered, so that’s also pretty exciting. For me, at least!)

I should add that Candace has been an absolute pleasure to work with. (It doesn’t hurt that she heaped praise on the “Vocabulary Lesson” poem right from the start!)

*Update on Wednesday morning: just received my free e-book! And the book is free for the next couple of days via Amazon Kindle, too.

Blogging Away

If you’re reading this, you likely know about my Practicing Writing blog. And you may know about the My Machberet blog, too.

But did you know that I maintain a third blog? (Admittedly, it’s one that I get paid to work on.)

It’s the blog for Fig Tree Books LLC, the publishing company where I am Media Editor. FTB, as you will recall, specializes in literature of American Jewish experience. As such, our blog regularly contributes material to the Jewish Book Carnival, a project of the Association of Jewish Libraries.

As the name suggests, the Carnival is itinerant, traveling each month from host site to host site to share news, reviews, and interviews from the world of Jewish books. We’ll be hosting December’s Carnival over on the FTB blog, so I’ve been spending some time this week gathering all of the links and editing the main post.

That post will go live on the 15th (Thursday). Sure, you’ll see it mentioned on Facebook and Twitter. But why not take advantage of FTB’s nifty new blog-subscription feature (pictured here), toward the top right of the blog page? That way, you’ll receive the Carnival post and all subsequent posts directly via email. (And you already know that my blog posts are worth reading, right?)

Coming Soon

This week brought confirmation of two writing-related events that I’ll be taking part in during February. One is an “off-site” event taking place around the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) conference in Washington; the other is a New York happening. I don’t yet have links to share, but I promise to fill you in as soon as I can spill all the details. Let’s just say that I’m anticipating both events with a lot of eagerness. Please stay tuned!

Just took a look at the Fig Tree blog and realized how much I’ve been missing. I signed up, too. Just wondering when I’ll have time to write after all this reading.
