Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
At Tinderbox Editions, a brief fee-free submission period for full-length poetry manuscripts ends Wednesday, December 7. “Our tastes range from Nikky Finney to Eduardo Corral to Rebecca Lindenberg to Ocean Vuong to Jody Gladding to Claudia Emerson to Ken Chen to Bhanu Kapil to Rachel Zucker to Sharon Olds to Cynthia Zarin.” Pays: “Publication will come with a standard contract.” (via Entropy‘s latest “Where to Submit” page)
“GrubStreet is proud to offer numerous $250 scholarships for Muse 2017 [annual conference] attendees.” Apply by December 9. Conference is in May 2017. No application fee.
From the WomenArts blog: “As part of our celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Support Women Artists Now Day/SWAN Day this year, we want to feature new voices in the WomenArts Blog. We are looking for reporters who can help us cover more of the inspiring work that women artists are doing, the latest research on gender parity in the arts, and the actions women are taking to end gender discrimination in the arts. We are especially interested in writers who can provide diverse perspectives in terms of race, class, religion, age, sexual/gender preference, disability or other characteristics. We will pay for every article we publish that has not been published elsewhere.” Pays: “Our maximum fee will be $200 for articles of 500 – 1,000 words that we publish that have not been published elsewhere. The fee will be negotiated on a case by case basis for shorter or previously published articles.”
“Writers Resist, a literary collective born of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, publishes creative expressions of resistance by diverse writers and artists. We are dedicated to challenging all things that diminish our nation’s quest for equality, freedom, justice and a healthy planet for all—while having a bit of fun. Please submit only those works that can be reasonably described as expressions of resistance, whether poetry, fiction, narrative nonfiction or images.” Pays: “We would like folks to consider donating their work to the resistance cause, but we know how lovely it is to be paid for our art. Consequently, thanks to an anonymous donation of $1,000, we can pay a token pittance for each of the first one hundred pieces published for the first time by Writers Resist. That’s $10 per accepted submission not previously published elsewhere. Should your submission be accepted for publication, we’ll ask you to confirm if you’d like to receive or decline your pittance.” NB: I discovered this site via Sara Marchant’s amazing essay.”

Ohio Northern University is advertising for an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing/Fiction: “We seek a dynamic colleague whose principal responsibilities will include facilitating creative writing workshops in fiction, especially in young adult/children’s fiction, science fiction/fantasy, or the graphic novel. In addition, the position includes teaching first-year writing, introductory literature and publication practicum courses.”
From Rowan University [New Jersey]: “The Department of Writing Arts welcomes applications for a full-time (10-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor, to join the department September 1, 2017. The successful candidate will primarily teach and help develop courses in the undergraduate and graduate writing programs that will prepare students looking for employment within the publishing industry.” NB: “The successful candidate will possess an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Creative Writing or related field with significant publications in fiction, nonfiction, or children’s writing.”
Position available at Utah Valley University: “Under the direction of the English and Literature Department, the Assistant Professor of English and Literature (emphasis creative writing, poetry in particular but preference given to candidates who write/teach both poetry and prose) designs and teaches four courses per semester in accordance with department and section policies.”
