Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying listings of competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Catapult Reportage Grant: “We invite writers and reporters to submit to us one paragraph pitching a human interest piece, flexibly defined, and 2 clips. The writer of the winning proposal will receive a $500 grant to do a clearly-defined project intended to yield a reported essay of 2000-6000 words which a) stands on its own as a remarkable piece of writing and b) tells us something about the place where you live. Women and people of color, especially those beginning their careers, are strongly encouraged to apply.” No application fee. Deadline: March 31, 2017. NB: “Strong projects will be limited enough that reporting can be completed within about 2 weeks, and a publishable draft of the story will be submitted promptly. The grant will be given in full to the writer to spend at their discretion—we hope that it will fund writer’s time, local travel, and daily expenses. Our magazine is open to considering projects which incorporate photo, sound, or video, in addition to text. The narrative that comes of this project will be published on our online magazine, Catapult (catapult.co), and the writer may co-publish with a print magazine or newspaper.”
  • “Lent is here and Structo is holding its fourth Lenten psalms translation contest. We’re looking for free translations from the biblical psalms.” Prize: “The winning psalmist will receive $150 and a two-year subscription to Structo.” No entry fee. Deadline: “Submissions are open until Easter Sunday (that’s Sunday 16th of April, at midnight UK time).”
  • Hashtag Queer: LGBTQ Creative Anthology is seeking material for its first edition, to be published this pride season, June 2017. We are seeking short creative work by queer-identified writers and artists &/or on queer themes. We are seeking fiction, non-fiction, poetry, scripts, and visual art.” Pays: “Contributors will receive, as a humble token of our appreciation, $5 per page of their work published in Hashtag Queer: LGBTQ Creative Anthology, with an additional $25 going to the creator of the artwork we select for the issue’s cover.” Deadline: April 30, 2017. (Thanks to @LawrenceSchimel for the tip on this one.)
  • From Literary Hub: “We are seeking a highly organized and motivated full-time, paid, editorial fellow at our New York office. The fellow will be an integral part of a small team, working closely with editors on day-to-day operations. As the fellow must be able to work with us in the office, we will not be considering remote applicants; applicants who are not currently in New York but willing to relocate should explicitly indicate that in their cover letters.” NB: “The fellowship is five months (April through August).” Application deadLine: March 17.
  • “The Asian American Writers’ Workshop, the preeminent literary arts nonprofit dedicated to excellent literature by writers of Asian American descent, is looking to hire an Events Coordinator….This is a junior position with benefits that will be either three-day-a-week or full-time.” The job is sited in New York.
  • Houstonia magazine is advertising an Associate Editor position: “Houstonia is the largest local magazine—and the only paid-circulation local magazine—in Houston, Texas, with an average monthly readership of more than 510,000. We’re seeking a journalist who can write and edit compelling short-and long-form stories that capture the city’s zeitgeist, on subjects ranging from health care to education to crime to society. Writing/editing longer personal essays, travel, and profile pieces comes with the territory, as does blogging.”

Erika – I owe you one! Recently you mentioned that some of your poetry had appeared at the Sunlight Press. I read it and enjoyed it, and liked the look of the publication, so I decided to sumit too. I’ve just had an acceptance! Thank you!
