Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying listings of competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
ICYMI: The April issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers late last week. As per usual, it includes plenty of no-fee, paying competitions and calls. You can find it online until the end of the month right here.
“Bright Wall/Dark Room currently publishes 8-10 essays per issue, on a monthly basis. Each issue is based loosely around a theme. Essays, criticism, reportage, interviews, and short humor pieces will all be evaluated and considered.” Pays: “Though our budget is quite limited, it is of high importance to us to be able to pay writers for their work. To that end, we are currently able to pay a modest sum ($25) for each accepted piece, upon publication, and we hope to increase that amount in the near future.” Upcoming themes include “Childhood” (with an April 7, 2017, deadline) and “The Hero’s Journey” (with a May 5, 2017, deadline).
“For the 2017 Waterman Fund essay contest, emerging writers are asked to offer and explore stories of what humans build in wild places, considering the ecological and emotional integrity of wilderness and wildness. From trails and bridges to communities and visitor service facilities, humans have an undeniable impact on the wild places we love, even as we seek to steward these most meaningful landscapes for their own sakes, ourselves and future generations. How do we strike a balance—personally and culturally—between discovering and sustaining the spirit and substance of wilderness and wildness?” Prize: “The winning essayist will be awarded $1500 and published in Appalachia. The Honorable Mention essay will receive $500. Both essays will be published on our website as well.” Deadline: April 15, 2017. No entry fee.
“Catapult’s online magazine is accepting fiction submissions.” Categories include short stories, standalone novel excerpts, flash fiction, and translation. Pays: “Writers will receive paid compensation for accepted pieces.” Deadline: April 30, 2017.
The Pellicer-Frost Binational Poetry Prize will award two first prizes of $2500 each, to a Mexican poet and to a U.S. poet. U.S. poets must reside in states along the Mexican border: California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Deadline: May 27, 2017. No entry fee. (via @LawrenceSchimel)

GrubStreet (Boston) seeks an instructor “to teach GrubStreet’s intensive, nine-month long Novel Generator program, for fourteen novel writers interested in drafting and developing a full novel manuscript, revising sections of it, and studying the novel form.”
