Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Even on Memorial Day, Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying listings of competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • You may have heard that Barrelhouse recently re-opened for nonfiction submissions. But may not have seen nonfiction editor Tom McAllister’s post on “Six Essays I’m Tired of Reading,” which could be helpful to peruse before you click “Submit.” Reminder: Barrelhouse pays “$50 to each contributor to our print issues, as well as two contributor copies.”
  • Reminder: There will be plenty of no-fee & paying competition listings and calls for work from journals and presses in the June issue of The Practicing Writer, which will go out to subscribers this week. Meantime, the May issue will remain online for a few more days.
  • Several half-time, salaried fellowships with Poets & Writers are now open for applications: the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation Readings & Workshops Fellowship, the Diana and Simon Raab Editorial Fellowship, and the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation Online Editorial Fellowship.
  • “Newsday, a leading news and multimedia organization on Long Island, has an opening for a theater writer to review Broadway, as well as major off Broadway and regional productions. The person will also be called on to cover breaking news, write profiles and trend stories, contribute to various listings and work with our online staff to develop a more vibrant digital presence.”
  • From the New York Writers Coalition: “In partnership with NYC Civic Corps we are seeking a vibrant, creative, organized self-starter with a passion for writing and social justice to serve as our new Program Coordinator for the months of September 2017 to July 2018.”
  • Also in New York: “Electric Lit, Inc. seeks Editor-in-Chief for electricliterature.com.”
  • “The Creative Writing program in the Department of Film, Theatre, and Creative Writing at the University of Central Arkansas invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in fiction. The teaching load is 4/4 (12 hours per semester).”
  • From Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire: “The Department of English invites applications for an adjunct faculty position for the fall 2017 semester. The successful candidate will teach one section of Creative Writing Poetry.”
  • “The University of Iowa’s Department of Health and Human Physiology invites applications for a 50% time, non-tenured Instructional Faculty (Lecturer) position in Scientific Writing for the academic year 2017-18, beginning August 2017, January 2018, or August 2018 renewable for a total of three years (2017-2020 or 2018-2021) and renewable thereafter in three year increments. Applications are sought from candidates with a demonstrated potential for outstanding teaching in writing with an emphasis on science. Duties of this position include teaching and undergraduate advising.”
