Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying listings of competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • “Princemere announces its tenth annual poetry prize of $300 for the best unpublished poem in any style.” Deadline is TOMORROW (September 12). No entry fee.
  • Tiny Tim Literary Review is a triannual literary review with a goal to normalize chronically ill/disability narratives in addition to humanizing medical professionals through their stories. We’ll be taking in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction work primarily. We’re also open to other formats as they present themselves. Dismantling ableism is important while also providing a place for medical narratives.” Deadline for the next issue is September 24. Pays: “Writers whose work is accepted will be compensated at $50 to be paid through PayPal.”
  • “Pigeon Pages NYC, known for its Brooklyn reading series, is now expanding into a literary journal publishing prose on pigeonpagesnyc.com. To celebrate our first flight into this new venture, we are launching a prose contest to be judged by Sarah Gerard, author of the essay collection Sunshine State and the novel Binary Star. We seek previously unpublished prose pieces of up to 4,000 words. We will accept submissions from any genre or hybrid-genre, with lyric or experimental prose welcome. We love writing with a strong sense of narrative and invite you to tell us a true story, be in based in the real or fictional world. We believe that a story about dragons can be just as true as a piece of memoir, and are less concerned with traditional genre definitions than we are with resonant, evocative writing. The author of the winning submission will receive $250 cash, with two runners-up receiving $50 cash each. All three winners will be published in Pigeon Pages, and all entries—winning or not—will be considered for publication.” There is no entry fee. Deadline: October 1, 2017.
  • From A Public Space: “We are thrilled to announce that applications will open for the 2018 Public Space Fellowships on September 15. The aim of these fellowships is to seek out and support writers who embrace risk in their work and their own singular vision. Writers who have not yet contracted to publish a book are invited to apply. Three fellowships will be awarded.” Fellowship packages include “six months of editorial support from A Public Space editors to prepare a piece for publication in the magazine; a $1,000 honorarium; the opportunity to meet with members of the publishing community, including agents, editors, and published writers; the opportunity to participate in a public reading and conversation in New York City with A Public Space editors and contributors.” There is no application fee. Deadline: October 15, 2017.
  • Job available in New York for “a creative and analytical Social Media Associate to join the Penguin Random House social media team.”
  • The New York Public Library is looking for an Editor and for a Social Media Associate.
  • “The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), a Washington D.C.-based not-for-profit organization, is looking to immediately hire a communications coordinator with 1-3 years of experience to support the communications team.”

Successful candidates will hold an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Creative Writing; have published at least one book from a national press; show evidence of a strong ongoing record of publication; and have experience teaching creative writing at the university level.”
  • “Kalamazoo College invites poets to apply for a tenure-track position in creative writing to begin September 2018. Curricular contributions will include a multi-genre introduction to creative writing (poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction) and intermediate and advanced workshops in poetry, with flexibility for shaping introductory through advanced courses around the candidate’s areas of specialization, including courses that would serve the College’s Shared Passages (first year, sophomore, and senior) Seminar program. In keeping with our students’ strong interests in issues of power and identity, structural inequality and social justice, we’re especially interested in candidates whose work respects/engages in the intersection of poetics and politics.”
  • Radford University has announced an “entry-level tenure-track assistant professor position. Teach American literature courses and fiction writing courses.”
  • “The English Department at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) announces a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that begins September 2018.
