Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Sycamore Review is looking for original poetry, fiction, non-fiction and art.” Pays: “For unsolicited printed work, Sycamore Review pays each contributor two copies, and $50 per short story or non-fiction piece, or $25 per poem.” NB: “Under our Submittable plan, we are allowed 800 non-fee submissions per month. If we exceed this, our regular submissions will change to a $2 fee so that we may continue to receive work. You may notice this happening at the end of a given month. At the beginning of the following month, we will revert to free submissions.”
  • CRAFT is an online publication celebrating both emerging and established writers. Our focus is on the craft of writing and how those elements make a good story great. We are interested in strong fiction that shines because of its exploration of craft….Our CRAFT Fiction categories are open year-round to any emerging or established author. We accept submissions from international writers. We accept simultaneous submissions but ask that you inform us immediately and withdraw your work if your story is accepted elsewhere. We pay our authors a flat rate of $100 for flash fiction and $0.10/word up to $200 for original short fiction. We do not charge submission fees, but are highly selective in what we choose to publish.” NB: “Each published story will include an editor’s introduction as well as a craft note from the author.”
  • Writing Armistice is the British Army’s 2018 poetry competition, sponsored by the Museum of Military Medicine. 2018 is the year of national commemoration of the Armistice in World War One. We invite poets to respond to these events, or any subject matter inspired by Armistice and to send us their resulting poems….Prizes are to be awarded in several categories for the best single poem exploring Armistice in any way (eg, thematically, linguistically, formally).” Categories include “Open Category” for entrants over 18 “from anywhere in UK or overseas,” with prizes of “£500 first prize, £300 second prize, £100 third prize plus additional commendations”; Museum of Military Medicine Commendation, with prize of £100; and Serving Soldier Prize, with prizes of “£200 first prize, £50 second prize and further commendation prizes.” Deadline: January 15, 2018 (midnight, UK time). There is no entry fee.
  • Applications for the July 2018 Mastheads Writers’ Residency in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, are now open. “Five writers across disciplines (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, translation) are awarded residencies. Residents receive a $900 stipend, travel reimbursement, a private room in a house shared with the other residents, and exclusive use of one of the Mastheads studios, which are located at new sites each season throughout the city of Pittsfield, in the heart of the Berkshire and Taconic Mountains. On weekdays, we provide on-call transportation to the studios. For other transportation needs, residents may use the bikes provided, their own cars, taxis, or Lyft. The studios are rustic and open-air….Public programming during the residency includes weekly lectures and community conversations with scholars and experts across disciplines. For 2018, our focus will be social activism through literature, and our five focus authors from the Pittsfield area will include Herman Melville, Fanny Kemble, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, W.E.B. Du Bois, and William Cullen Bryant.” At the conclusion of the residency, each resident is asked “to submit a minimum of 1,000 words or 2 to 5 poems to publish in the The Berkshire Eagle and to preserve in an ongoing Pittsfield Anthology.” There is no application fee. Deadline: February 28, 2018.

  • Texas Medical Center (Houston) is looking for an Assistant Editor, TMC News.
  • In Washington (DC), the American Psychiatric Association seeks an Assistant Editor.
  • In Seattle, Mountaineers Books “is seeking a part-time Assistant to the Publisher. This newly-developed position supports the Publisher with a wide variety of day-to-day tasks including administration, reports, research, and communications with staff, management team, Board of Directors, authors, photographers, partners, donors, and media. This 20-hour per week position supports development/fundraising, public relations, and administration, and requires strong writing, communications, and organizational skills, as well as a love of the outdoors, adventure, wild places, and books.”
  • “United Press International is looking for experienced writers to cover U.S. and world news, as well as health. The work is a mix of aggregation and original reporting and involves some web production. The ideal candidate has some digital experience with solid writing skills, a sharp eye for errors, is self-reliant and a good researcher. The work can be done remotely. It is a contract position — no benefits; pay is about $500/week.”
  • “Moore College of Art and Design [Philadelphia] seeks a full-time faculty member for a three-year renewable appointment Fall 2018 with specialization in creative Writing and the Humanities.”
  • The University of Nebraska, Kearney, anticipates a “special appointment at the Assistant Professor level, non-tenure track, with the possibility of renewal, to fill endowed Reynolds Chair in Creative Writing. We seek to appoint an excellent teacher and creative writer who has produced known and appreciated work, with special consideration given to poets.”
  • In New Jersey: “The program in Creative Writing, in the Department of English at Rutgers University, requests applications for the position of Teaching Instructor. Our faculty teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced Creative Writing in several genres. We especially invite applications with credentials in teaching poetry, digital composition, young adult fiction, and with administrative ability in such areas as: course development, course co-ordination and evaluations; extracurricular event planning and team building; organization of mentoring and advisement (individual advising, direction of honors projects, advising for our Certificate Program and Minor, and conducting skill development sessions for application to graduate school or MFA programs, for example).
  • Carson-Newman University, “a leading Christian Liberal Arts institution” in Tennessee that “employs faculty and staff who are actively supportive of its aim as an institution with a Christian commitment,” is seeking “applicants for an Assistant Professor of English in the English Department. The position is tenure track to begin August 2018. Candidates for the position must have, at the time of appointment, a Ph.D. in English. Specialization in American Literature before 1865, with expertise in Creative Writing (creative non-fiction and memoir emphasis) is preferred. Experience in online teaching is also desirable.”

      I was formerly a Unipresser, working freelance without benefits (like the positions listed above they have open now). Initially I wrote radio briefs four times a day, transitioning to longer articles when they sold that service. While more income would be great, working that hard for their modest compensation does not appeal to me now.
