Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The next contest from Brilliant Flash Fiction asks entrants to submit a story (up to 300 words) based on a visual-art prompt provided at the website. Prizes: 50 euro first prize (or equivalent amount in your currency); 25 euro second prize; 15 euro third prize. Deadline: February 15, 2018. No entry fee.
  • Attention, Canadian poets: “The Arc Poetry Society seeks proposals for the position of Poet-in-Residence. The 2018/2019 program year will represent Arc’s eighth virtual residency.” A detailed position description is available at the website. Payment: “The contract fee for the poet in residence will be $9,000, pending funding. Payment schedule is negotiable. Standard writer’s fee rates will apply for publications in Arc.” NB: “Candidates should be Canadian citizens with a strong background in the practice of contemporary poetry. Candidates should also have at least one full-length collection published by an established Canadian publisher.” There is no application fee, and the deadline is February 15, 2018.
  • Journal call: “gaze is interested in what it means to see or be seen. how and why we see as we see. gaze as a form of violence, as ownership, as intrusion. gaze as an attempt to apprehend. or how we love each other through the act of looking. we are wide open to interpretation; think of ‘gaze’ less as a theme and more as an invitation. we want your poems, your stories, your essays, your meditations, your audio or video, your artwork, your passion project, your experiment, your cry in the dark. most of all, we want to know how you go on loving. we think this has something to do with not shutting one’s eyes.” Pays: “$10 (usd) per accepted piece (the Cash App is our preferred method of payment).” There is no submission fee. (Found this one via @Duotrope.)
  • There’s plenty of fresh info on contests and calls in the current issue of The Practicing Writer, which went out to subscribers last week. It’s never too late to subscribe to this free resource!
  • Overlapping somewhat with our current/recent newsletters and Monday Markets posts, but including some items that ours haven’t: Erica Verrillo’s February list of calls from paying venues (that don’t charge sub fees) and this post from Trish Hopkinson.
  • Program Officer sought: “The Maine Humanities Council is seeking someone exceptional to join our team. In this complex world the MHC uses old-school tools – books, poetry, history, big ideas – to foster meaningful connection and positive change in communities throughout Maine.”
  • “The Poynter Institute, one of the nation’s most respected journalism organizations, is searching for a creative Managing Editor and leader to direct and inspire a team of journalists, experts and faculty in producing one of the nation’s leading media news, information and training websites. This position comes with a high level of authority and the creative freedom to make poynter.org a lively and relevant destination for those interested in media news and in the best practices of journalism.” This position is based in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
  • Mental Floss (New York) is looking for a Staff Writer.
  • “The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a Full-Time Lecturer position in Creative Writing within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences. This position requires a strong record of teaching excellence in poetry writing and first year composition that demonstrates the ability to work with underrepresented students in developing their voice through the use of innovative pedagogies in writing. Additional experience teaching creative nonfiction is preferred. Successful candidates will also have experience working with literary journals. Experience teaching courses on spoken word poetry, the military experience and/or literary editing & publishing is a plus.”
  • “The Department of English at Washington College [Maryland] seeks candidates for a Visiting Assistant Professor appointment, with specialization in journalism and creative nonfiction to begin in August 2018.”
