Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three quick things:

1. Poetry manuscript update: Well, the first rejection has come in. BUT, it was a positive and encouraging one. So, there’s that.

2. I’ve written and submitted my latest “A View from the USA” essay for the UK’s Jewish Chronicle. It should be available by week’s end. I will share!

3. Barring a snowpocalypse, I am off to jury duty today. Which has brought back fond memories of a short-story I wrote a long time ago that is framed by jury duty. The story, written more than 15 years ago, was never accepted for publication—I like to say that it lived up to its title, “The Unchosen”—but I still have warm feelings for it. As I discovered when I reread it yesterday.

What’s new with you?

I guess it’s too much to say congrats for the personal rejection, but every time I’ve received one it has given me a high! I’ve a got a clutch of these from highly reputed journals recently, and have been basking in their glow even more so than some of my acceptances 🙂

      I know what you mean!

At least you know when you get a rejection that you and your work have been acknowledged!

      True.

    Erika,

I think I have you to thank for informing me about this flash fiction contest I almost won. There were 180 entries, 12 short listed, and three winners. I am the first on the short list! OK, so no money, but the story is published online and shows my story at the top of the short list. It’s the closest to winning a fiction contest I’ve come so far. Here’s the link if you’d like to see the winning and short listed stories:

It must be the week for personal and even helpful book rejections. I’m on this journey too. Keep on sending until your Work finds the right home.!

    1. Erika Dreifus says:

      Same to you, Linda!

  5. Great news, Erika, about the poetry manuscript. A personal rejection is golden. Also, love your new author photo!

Thanks, Michele! I think that the editor/publisher believes in personal responses since there’s a fee charged for reading, but yes, you’re right–it’s always good to be grateful for those. And thanks for the kind words about the photo, too. Hope all’s going well with you.
