Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Call for short-fiction submissions from Moment magazine. Paying. Deadline: May 1.
  • Call for submissions for Poetry magazine issue dedicated to the work of transgender, gender non-conforming, and other non-cis poets, guest-edited by Christopher Soto, to be published in fall 2018.” Payment will be at usual rates. Deadline: May 31, 2018.
  • “Hippocampus Magazine is awarding three scholarships to HippoCamp 2018. One will definitely be awarded to a full-time student, while the other two student status does not matter. For this scholarship competition, we’ll consider quality of writing and financial need, so we’re looking for a writing sample and some additional information.” Check the detailed guidelines—they are clear, but extensive. No fee to apply. Deadline: April 6, 2018.
  • Several positions are available with the Asian American Writers’ Workshop in New York.
  • “HealthyWomen, the nation’s leading independent health information source for women, is looking to a hire a Social Media Assistant. This role will help us reach more women on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest to grow our uplifting online community that aims to inform and empower women to take charge of their own health. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), is independent, knowledgeable about the latest trends in women’s health and wellness, skilled in the latest social media features, and passionate about telling an inspiring, engaging brand story.” NB: “This position is remote, offers flexibility, and requires 15 hrs/wk.”
  • Position for a full-time lecturer in creative writing at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo.”One-year appointment with the possibility of an extension to a second year. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Duties and responsibilities include teaching two junior-level classes in fiction writing each term as well as freshman composition.”
  • “The Creative Writing Program at Oberlin College invites applications for two full-time tenure track faculty positions in the College of Arts and Sciences. Initial appointment to each position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall semester of 2018, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.” Positions are in fiction or poetry.
  • “The Department of Literature, Journalism and Modern Languages at Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, welcomes applications for two tenure-track positions in writing, with specializations in fiction and nonfiction, beginning August 2018. Both positions are open due to retirements.”
